We have the third and final installment of this interleague series as the NL East's Philadelphia Phillies host the AL Central's Detroit Tigers.
Philadelphia won each of the first two games and will be seeking a sweep as Detroit looks to pull off an upset.
Here's a look at the odds, as well as my Tigers vs. Phillies betting pick and prediction.
It has been an underwhelming start to the campaign for the Detroit Tigers, who enter this contest with a 26-33 record. However, since they play in the weak AL Central, they're only in third place.
However, with this team’s current lineup, I wouldn't be too optimistic. This season, Detroit ranks in the bottom five of the league in runs per game, hits per game, BA, SLG, OPS and home runs.
Additionally, this team struggles with the strikeout and ranks 23rd in the league in K%. Looking at Wednesday’s projected starting lineup, five of the nine hitters possess a K% north of 21% this year.
Right-hander Zack Wheeler takes the mound for the Philadelphia Phillies and should be a good candidate to back in this contest. Through 12 starts this season, Wheeler is 4-4 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.
Those are certainly not the strongest surface-level stats in the world, but they aren't fully indicative of his performance. Wheeler ranks in the 68th percentile or higher in Average Exit Velocity, xERA/xwOBA, xSLG and Barrel%.
Additionally, he ranks in the 72nd percentile or higher in K% and Whiff%. A strikeout specialist, Wheeler boasts a K% north of 26% in each of his past two seasons.
Tigers vs. Phillies Betting Pick
Wheeler has only recorded nine or more strikeouts in two of his past eight starts, so this game is a good opportunity to buy low — especially against the swing-happy Tigers. In his lone career start against Detroit, Wheeler allowed just three runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Through 31 career plate appearances against Wheeler, this current Detroit roster possesses a fade-worthy 32.3 K% and a 28.3 Whiff%. We saw Aaron Nola rack up 12 strikeouts against the Tigers on Monday and Taijuan Walker collect eight punchouts on Tuesday, so Wheeler could be in a good spot to keep it going on Wednesday evening.
Pick: Zack Wheeler Over 8.5 Strikeouts (-120 | Play up to -130)
