Tony Sartori's Blue Jays vs Yankees Betting Insights
Right-hander Kevin Gausman takes the mound for the Blue Jays, and he should serve as a strong candidate to back.
Gausman has been one of the more underrated pitchers this decade, posting a 3.83 ERA or lower in each of the past five seasons.
That success has continued into 2025, as the right-hander boasts a 3.16 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. His underlying metrics suggest more of the same moving forward.
Entering this matchup, Gausman ranks in the 62nd percentile in expected ERA (xERA) and 64th percentile in expected batting average (xBA). Furthermore, he is 3-2 with a 3.40 ERA over his past 10 starts against the Yankees.
Following Gausman is a trustworthy bullpen. This season, Toronto’s relief staff ranks 12th in ERA, ninth in fielding independent pitching (FIP), second in expected FIP (xFIP) and eighth in wins above replacement (WAR).
You can’t discuss strong relief staff without mentioning the Yankees. This year, their bullpen ranks sixth in ERA, eighth in FIP, 11th in xFIP and fifth in WAR.
That said, this relief staff may not be called upon early, given that left-hander Max Fried gets the ball for New York. Fried is one of the best pitchers in baseball, posting a 3.02 ERA since joining the league in 2017.
He has been particularly impactful thus far in 2025, producing a 4-0 record with a 1.42 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through five starts. Fried also ranks in the 60th percentile or higher in xERA, average exit velocity, walk rate, barrel rate and hard-hit rate.
That success is likely to continue against Toronto. Through three career outings against the Blue Jays, Fried is 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA.
How To Make Blue Jays vs Yankees Picks
Pitching shouldn’t be an issue in this contest. Both starting pitchers and both bullpens are excellent.
Toronto’s power numbers are also minimal. The Blue Jays rank 25th in runs per game, 26th in slugging percentage, 24th in OPS and 29th in home runs.
The only reason this total is as high as 8.5 is that New York boasts one of the best lineups in the league. However, I don't think that one variable outweighs all the others enough to justify this total.
Pick: Under 8.5 (-110 or better)
Moneyline
I lean toward New York, but don't want to fade Gausman.
Run Line (Spread)
I also like New York to cover, but I am staying away for the same reason listed above.
Over/Under
As mentioned, I'm betting Under 8.5.
