The Chicago White Sox look to complete the sweep of the Detroit Tigers Wednesday afternoon. A victory today would push the White Sox one game closer to the .500 mark and help them keep pace in the AL Central.
The Detroit Tigers, who are 3-7 in their last 10 games, keep hoping to find their 2021 magic that is simply not there. However, Alex Faedo gets the start on Wednesday afternoon, and he's been a pleasant surprise for the Tigers and is presently their best starting pitcher.
White Sox Offense Showing Signs of Life
The White Sox offense is finally starting to heat up as they are averaging over five runs per game over their last four series'. Their offense had been struggling most of the season, but their regulars are starting to turn things around.
Over the past three weeks, the White Sox are posting a 107 team wRC+ on the road against RHP, good for 11th in MLB. Despite some key injuries to their offense, the Sox have started to show some adequate depth in the absence of players like Tim Anderson, Eloy Jimenez and most recently Yasmani Grandal.
Vince Velasquez will make his return from the IL to start the final game of this series on Wednesday. While there is always a temptation to fade Velasquez, he's been annoyingly decent this season, much to the chagrin of Velasquez faders. However, his 6.75 ERA and 5.54 FIP on the road this season make the fade very tempting.
He'll be followed by a bullpen that statistically is middle of the pack, but has been a disappointing unit overall.
Tigers Need Faedo To Prevent Runs
It's been tough sledding in Detroit this season, and despite the offseason acquisitions of Javy Baez and Austin Meadows, the Tigers are still one of the worst offenses in MLB.
Over the past three weeks, the Tigers have posted a 76 team wRC+, which is 27th in MLB, but number 30 in our hearts.
Faedo takes the mound for the Tigers and he's been their most reliable starter so far this season. He's also been very reliable at home. So far in 2022, Faedo has posted a 3.43 ERA with a 3.33 FIP. He's been solid, but obviously run support will be an issue.
However, the Tigers have had one of the best bullpens over the past few weeks, ranking second in FIP and sixth in ERA. Frankly, the Tigers bullpen has been great most of the season.
White Sox-Tigers Pick
The Tigers certainly have the pitching edge in today's matchup, but their offense is so starved for scoring that it's hard to back them with any confidence.
On the other hand, Velasquez and the White Sox shaky bullpen makes fading the Sox a very tempting proposition on Wednesday. The over is set at 9 runs, but it would seem the White Sox would have to carry that total and considering the Tigers' pitching edge, that's hard to trust.
Therefore, the only logical move here is to take the under. if it stays at 9 and remains at plus money, it should be the move. However, it should be taken to the -110 threshold.
Pick: Under 9 +100
