The Minnesota Twins look to clinch the series victory Saturday afternoon over the visiting Chicago White Sox.
The White Sox have dropped five straight including a sweep on the road by the Cleveland Guardians. Their offense has disappeared and now they turn to Vince Velasquez to stop the bleeding.
The Minnesota Twins run out the resurgent Dylan Bundy, who has been on a roll to start the season. He's off to a 2-0 start and is throwing slower than ever, but he's thriving.
Both offenses have struggled to meet expectations so far this season, but perhaps it's time one of them experience a little bit of a positive regression.
White Sox Need Offense To Wake Up
With A.J. Pollock returning to the lineup, the White Sox hope he can provide a little extra thump to a group that has been the second-worst offense over the past week.
The White Sox are 28th in team wRC+ and 27th in runs scored over the past week, which amplifies their season-long struggles. They're still 25th in team wRC+ and 22nd in runs scored, which is a far cry from the offensive numbers they've put up over the past few seasons.
Vince Velasquez has been somewhat serviceable so far this season. However, he's making his first road start of the season and he has posted a road ERA north of seven over the past two seasons and in 2021 he posted a 7.72 road FIP.
This is not a great recipe for victory. Especially going against a motivated division rival.
Twins Should Beat Up Velasquez
Byron Buxton returned to the Twins' lineup Thursday, but did not play in Friday night's series opener. Perhaps the day off is a precautionary measure and he'll be back in the lineup Saturday.
The thing is, the Twins shouldn't need Buxton in the lineup to jump on Velasquez considering his road struggles. However, the Twins have also been a disappointing offensive unit in their own right. They're 23rd in runs scored and 21st in team wRC+ this season.
This could be a good situation for the Twins' offense to at least move the needle in the right direction against an opposing offense with no confidence and a highly vulnerable road starter.
Bundy has delivered two solid starts and two victories for the Twins so far in 2022. Although recent history is unkind to Bundy, his claimed bill of good health and the early numbers mean he is innocent until proven guilty.
White Sox-Twins Pick
The White Sox are really struggling and it seems the rest of the AL Central smells blood in the water. The White Sox are vulnerable, the AL Central is improving and this matchup does not seem to be one that is going to help the White Sox snap out of their recent funk.
The White Sox are the underdogs at open and rightfully so. The Twins ML should definitely be the pick here and should be taken to the -150 threshold before the RL becomes an option. However, the RL may not be a safe play considering the Twins are also struggling.
Pick: Twins ML -130
