Fresh off a series victory in Los Angeles, the New York Yankees return to the Bronx to begin a three-game set with the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees have begun to heat up and are making up ground on the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East.
As for the White Sox, they've struggled to get things going as they sit nine games under .500 entering this matchup. However, no one has pulled away in the AL Central, so their window of opportunity is still open as they are getting healthier.
While this matchup will be played in the hitter-friendly confines of Yankee Stadium, it will be decided by the men on the mound. These two pitching staffs are in stark contrast to one another.
So, let's take a closer look and see which team has the edge in this series opener.
The White Sox lineup has been ravaged by injuries through the first quarter of the season as big pieces like Eloy Jimenez, Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada and Luis Robert have all had stints on the injured list. However, they've had some guys step up and keep the team afloat, as the efforts of Jake Burger and Andrew Vaughn have not gone unnoticed.
Despite the White Sox now being healthy and receiving additional contributions, they have still struggled mightily. They come into this matchup ranked in the bottom 10% of the league in wOBA. Chicago is also hitting just .240 as a team and is not showing signs of positive regression.
The White Sox may be in trouble tonight as they'll be up against a surging Clarke Schmidt. The Yankees' young right-hander has been spectacular over his last three starts, as he's allowed just three runs over that span and struck out 17 batters in just over 15 innings of work.
Schmidt appears to have found his groove, and his metrics have yet to account for this. However, his FIP is 3.95, which is significantly lower than his season ERA of 5.01. When you factor in the matchup, his success should continue tonight.
As for Schmidt's counterpart, Lucas Giolito has had an up-and-down season to this point. He's been learning how to survive while surrendering much more contact than he did earlier in his career.
Giolito has been able to produce swings and misses at an average rate, but his rise in contact rate could get him in trouble against this Yankees lineup. New York is in the top 7% of the majors in barrel rate and is due for positive regression at the plate.
In addition to the Yankees making better contact of late, they are also due to hit Giolito. The current Yankees lineup has hit just .175 in 63 at-bats against Giolito. However, they have an average exit velocity of 90 mph, and that amount of hard contact raises their xBA to .248.
If Giolito is able to contain them, they should be able to do damage against the White Sox bullpen. Chicago has the fifth-worst bullpen ERA in the majors and has the sixth-worst home run-to-fly ball ratio.
The Bronx Bombers should live up to their nickname in this one.
White Sox vs. Yankees Betting Pick
While the White Sox have the bigger name on the mound, the Yankees hold the advantage in nearly every area of this matchup. Schmidt has really come into his own lately and should stifle a struggling lineup.
On the other side, the Yankees' bats should be able to get to Giolito, but even if he is able to contain them, the White Sox bullpen has been very susceptible to the long ball, and that's bad news in Yankee Stadium.
Back the Yankees to take this series opener.
