The New York Yankees made a statement Friday night, taking game one over the Toronto Blue Jays, 12-3. The Yankees moved their season record to 6-3 against the Jays and look to clinch the series victory Saturday afternoon.
Toronto looks to bounce back and even up the series on Saturday, as it sends its ace Alek Manoah to the mound. Manoah will be squaring off against Jameson Taillon, who has been on an excellent run of his own.
In a battle of two high-scoring offenses, pitching may end up taking center stage in this AL East showdown.
Pitching Taking Yanks to Next Level
The Yankees have won eight straight games since their last loss, and this feels like the millionth time they've had a winning streak of seven or more games this season.
Taillon has fared well against the Blue Jays in three starts this season, posting a 2.76 ERA and a 2.58 FIP over 16 1/3 innings. In his last start in Toronto, he threw six strong innings while striking out six and surrendering just one earned run.
In general, pitching has propelled the Yankees to elite status in 2022. Their bullpen has done an excellent job this season, and over the past three weeks, they have the second-best ERA and are third in FIP.
The Yankees' offense has also been elite, as they've posted the best team wRC+ on the road against RHP over the past three weeks.
The Yankees simply have no weaknesses at the moment.
Could Jays' Manoah Have Upperhand?
If anyone can stop the Yankees, it might be Manoah. While some of his competitors in the AL Cy Young race have experienced some mid-season regression, Manoah has remained steady.
In Manoah's two starts against the Yankees, he's only given up one run over 12 innings. While he walked five batters, he stranded every runner who reached base against him in both starts and is averaging over a K per inning.
The Blue Jays' offense has also been hitting well of late. They have the third best team wRC+ at home against RHP over the past three weeks and have scored five or more runs in four of their last six games.
Their main weakness has been their bullpen, as they have the sixth-highest ERA and 10th-highest FIP over the past three weeks. If Manoah can't work deep into this game, the Yankees are going to have a considerable edge in this department.
Yankees-Blue Jays Pick
Considering this pitching matchup, 8 seems like a relatively high total. While both offenses have been hitting well of late, Manoah and Taillon have been offense suppressors.
Even with the Jays' shaky bullpen, the under still seems like a good play, and it's also a good looking value.
If it stays around the -105 range, jump on it. However, it can be played to -110. Also, having room for a push makes it more appealing.
Pick: Under 8 -105
