The 2023 NBA Draft is almost here, and the odds for the No. 2 and No. 3 picks, among many others, are on the move.
Many consider Scoot Henderson to be the second-best player in this draft — and also the player with the second-greatest star potential behind Victor Wembanyama. But when the Charlotte Hornets won the second pick in the NBA Draft Lottery, the chances of Henderson being picked second fell because the Hornets have another point guard, LaMelo Ball, as their best player.
The Hornets have noted that they may draft for fit instead of best player available here, and that’s why Alabama forward Brandon Miller had ascended to the favorite to be drafted second.
The Portland Trail Blazers own the rights to the third pick in the draft, and this is a major pivot point in the draft. The Trail Blazers have a variety of moves possible here, including trading the pick for someone like Zion Williamson or Paul George or taking the pick for themselves and trading star guard Damian Lillard as part of a rebuilding effort.
While odds for sporting events are tied down to a power rating from sportsbooks, there is no power rating for players entering the drafts because of the subjective nature of the draft and player evaluation for different teams. Consequently, there are more rapid shifts in odds based on what industry insiders and media members are conveying to the public.
Additionally, liability always plays a role when a wiseguy takes a stance on a player with extremely long odds, causing books to move those long numbers in order to minimize risk. That’s why a 20-1 longshot might move to 3-1 in the span of hours, which would never happen for an alternate spread line in an NBA game, for example.
As a result, the odds for Miller and Henderson to be drafted second and third are on the move as rumors continue to swirl on draft day.
