Celtics vs. Spurs Preview

The Celtics received a scare last Monday when Jayson Tatum went down with an ankle injury. The Celtics star was able to warm up on Wednesday, but he did not go against the Suns. It would turn out that Boston would not need him as it cruised to a 132-102 victory. Jaylen Brown was aggressive from the start as he scored 24 points and knocked down four threes in 28 minutes.

Tatum, who hates to miss a road game, will not have to tonight as he is not listed on today's injury report. In fact, the Celtics will have their preferred starting five available for today's game, which is a scary proposition for any team. The Celtics have won seven straight games and 12 of their last 13 games.

One player who may have a bit of added motivation is Derrick White. The Celtics guard spent the first four and a half years of his career in San Antonio before trading to Boston. He has scored 15 points in each of his last three games against the Spurs. More recently, he has filled the stat sheet with four rebounds in eight of his last 10 games and four assists in each of his last 10 games.

The Spurs will have not their preferred backcourt with DeAaron Fox out for the season, but Stephon Castle is making a strong case to be included in San Antonio's foundation for the future. Last year's fourth overall pick has scored 20 points in nine of his last 16 games. Since the All-Star break, he is averaging 17.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game.

Devin Vassell has also been on a heater of late with seven 20-point games in his last 10 outings. Castle and Vassell led the Spurs to winning five out of seven. However, they will enter tonight's game on a two-game losing streak.

Celtics vs. Spurs Prediction

Boston enters tonight's game having covered four straight and five of its last six games on the road. It defeated the Spurs by 13 points last month with Victor Wembanyama and Fox in the lineup. Now, the Celtics will have the health advantage tonight.

Tatum has scored 24 points in eight of his last 10 games and four of his last five games against San Antonio. Brown's line is a bit lower than usual considering that he is averaging nearly 23 points per game. He has scored 20 points in five games against the Spurs, going for at least 29 points in three of them.

A few of their baskets may be assisted by White, who is averaging 4.5 assists per game this season. He has recorded four assists or more in six of his last seven games with Tatum and Brown active and has 14 assists in his last two games against San Antonio. I'll complete this parlay with Castle, who has scored 15 points in eight straight games and had 20 in his first career game against the Celtics.

Best Bet: Celtics -12.5 (-110)
