Handicap

The Nets are the team with the most reason to tank this season. The 2025 Draft features some spectacular prospects, with Cooper Flag, Ace Bailey, and more in this class. They just traded their best player in Mikal Bridges to their big brother in Manhattan. Their 2027 pick is swappable for Houston. This is the year to re-orient the franchise for the future.

To get into the top three for the lottery and 40 percent odds of a top-three pick, it's likely going to take winning fewer than 20 games this season. The No.1 spot will likely finish in the teens.

It's really that simple. There's no clear formula for what an over looks like for the Nets. Their two best players in Estimated Plus-Minus last season were Dennis Smith Jr. and Mikal Bridges. Both are gone.

Potential trades? Cam Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith are both likely to be gone by the deadline. They extended Nic Claxton so presumably he'll stick around?

There's Ben Simmons which… I'll be honest, I won't really consider until he plays something like 30 games without interruption.

Simmons, along with Bojan Bogdanović, are on expiring contracts. The whole makeup of the team looks like what you would put together if you were trying to acquire a top-three pick.

There's a little bit of intrigue with the possibility of a very 2021-esque hyper-switchable lineup. They can put Simmons — if he plays — at point guard with a big wing (Johnson/DFS), promising stretch four Noah Clowney at power forward and Claxton at five. That's big and versatile. I'm not sure it's good or has enough shot creation, defense, or rebounding, but it's at least a structure to work with.

Lineups with Claxton and Clowney together appeared in 13 games last season going 6-7 with a +2.4 net rating.

We're going to see a lot of Cam Thomas, a lot of Day'Ron Sharpe. If that sounds like a team you want to believe will make an improbable run, go for it.

Trends:

Since the 2011 season not including the 2020 COVID-shortened season…

  • Bottom-five win totals are 31-27 to the under including ties.
  • Win totals of 22.5 or less are 9-7 to the over.

How It Goes Over

If Ben Simmons returns to being the centerpiece of an NBA offense or if Cam Thomas suddenly evolves into an entirely different type of offensive player. If Jordi Fernandez suddenly figures out a structure for this team behind switching defense and volume 3-point shooting. Honestly, if they go over, the team has to be pretty frustrated. They are not being subtle with this roster build.

How It Goes Under

Their roster does most of the work, trades and strategic load management takes care of the rest of it.

Sneaky Guy I Like

Day'Ron Sharpe has really turned into a quality center. There was trade interest in him over the summer. Claxton's versatility makes him more valuable but as Sharpe develops into an older bruiser, there's real value in what he brings. Sharpe had the best on-court net rating for any player to play over 500 minutes for Brooklyn last year. Having a real center you can either develop or trade is very valuable right now.
