Utah Jazz vs Los Angeles Lakers NBA Preview
Luka Doncic is set to make his Lakers debut on Monday night against the Utah Jazz. What a trade! In this debut against the Utah Jazz, we need to dive into the nuances of Luka and LeBron and how they weave together.
The Lakers got the wild news that their other deadline acquisition, Mark Williams, was subject to a trade recision after there was a failed physical and it leaves the Lakers with just one center on the roster in Jaxson Hayes. It complicates things with Dalton Knecht being traded for him and now being brought back into the fold.
While Luka is officially questionable for this game, he's expected to make his debut. LeBron James (ankle) is also questionable, but I'd expect him to play as well. For the Jazz, they will continue to miss Collin Sexton for this one.
The integration of Luka Doncic into this rotation will be interesting. There are two ball-dominant players in Luka and LeBron James and this is really the first time in LeBron's entire career where he will not receive the primary defense assignment which should boost his offensive output.
Luka is at worst by any metric a top 4 player in the NBA, and now he gets a chance to be paired with an all time great who is still performing at an elite level. I expect them to be able to play off of each other with some extremely nuanced offensive schemes as the season develops; however, in this first game, I'm not expecting anything ground breaking.
With Luka and LeBron mostly on ball, I think Reaves will see an uptick in his 3-point frequency relative to his overall shot profile. I also expect Dorian Finney-Smith to see some more looks from beyond the arc as he's someone Luka and LeBron can find to bury open looks. This is particularly notable against Utah who allows the second-highest frequency of 3s in the league, per Cleaning the Glass.
The interplay between Luka and LeBron will be fascinating to watch throughout the rest of this season and into next. I do not think we can expect greatness from them this season; however, with two of the highest Basketball IQ players in league history, I certainly do not want to bet against them.
The integration of LeBron and Luka Doncic will be one for the ages. Utah has been competitive; however, the Lakers should take care of business in this spot.
The Jazz are building for tomorrow, and their overall inability to defend from beyond the arc will be their downfall.
They struggle to defend the 3-ball, yet they are also a sieve at the rim. I expect Luka Doncic and LeBron to score at will.
