Knicks vs. 76ers Preview
The 76ers returned home on Sunday night and picked up their second win of the season, a 107-105 victory over the Hornets. However, tonight will be a night of firsts.
Philadelphia will get its superstar center back as Joel Embiid returns from injury and suspension to make his season debut. Tonight also kicks off the Emirates NBA Cup and the Knicks will come to town after a thrilling first-round series in last season's playoffs.
The Knicks were also no strangers to high-profile acquisitions this summer with the additions of Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Thus far, it has taken a bit of time for the Knicks to gel as they come in with a 4-5 record.
New York ranks 21st in defensive rating and has been particularly vulnerable inside as opponents are shooting 91.4% in the restricted area with Towns as the primary defender.
That should work to the benefit of Embiid, even if his minutes are restricted a bit. Embiid has averaged 30 points per game in each of the past three seasons and is averaging nearly a point per minute in that span. Embiid has scored at least 25 points in 11 of his past 13 games against the Knicks. Additionally, a few of his baskets may be set up by his new teammate, Paul George, who has 17 assists over his past two games.
With Embiid back in the lineup, the pace of this game will slow down. Neither of these teams play fast to begin with as they are two of the bottom-three teams in the league in pace. However, that also presents some value with the total, which has dropped to 211 points. That number is too low for two teams ranking 20th and 21st in defensive rating, particularly with Jalen Brunson on the other side.
Brunson is one of three former Villanova players on the Knicks, along with Bridges and Josh Hart, and they will relish the opportunity to steal another victory in their former college arena. Brunson has scored 25 points in three of his past five games and the Sixers are allowing 23.1 points per game to point guards.
Knicks vs. 76ers Prediction
Philadelphia has a back-to-back Wednesday and Embiid has made it clear that he won't be playing in back-to-back this season. That means at 2-7, the Sixers will need to take advantage of every game that he is on the floor. As a result, I am expecting his usage to be very high while he is on the floor tonight.
Embiid averaged 34.7 points per game last season and has had a lot of success against Towns in the past. Even though his minutes may be restricted in some capacity, Embiid has scored 25 points in eight of his past 10 games when playing between 25 and 32 minutes.
Embiid's points will serve as one leg in my same-game parlay. I'll also be backing Brunson, George and the over.
