A little over two weeks ago, the Magic won the first meeting in this season's series 119-115 in Orlando.
They were led by forward Paolo Banchero, who had 50 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists in one of the best individual performances of this young season. However, Banchero suffered a torn right oblique in the team's following game in Chicago. He will miss tonight's game as well as several more weeks.
Without Banchero, Orlando is 0-3, with double-digit losses to the Cavaliers, Mavericks, and Thunder. In those three games, it's averaging just 93.3 points with a -15.8 net rating. Center Wendell Carter Jr. returned to the lineup against the Mavericks, but he played just nine minutes before suffering a foot injury and will be out again tonight.
Without its starting center and power forward, the Magic will rely heavily on small forward Franz Wagner and point guard Jalen Suggs, who have point lines of 23.5 and 18.5, respectively, across most books tonight. Wagner has scored 20 points in just one of his past five games, but Suggs should be in a good spot for a big scoring night.
Over his past six games, Suggs has averaged 16 field goal attempts and 20 points per game. He has struggled from 3 in his past three games, shooting just 3-for-16. However, he went 6-for-13 from behind the arc and scored 25 points in the last meeting against the Pacers.
Orlando, facing its fourth consecutive playoff participant in a row, is in danger of a 0-5 road trip. It may find more success offensively compared to recent games, as the Pacers are allowing 121.9 points. However, it remains a handful offensively.
Indiana is fifth in the NBA in scoring at 118.4 points per game. It has topped 134 points in its last two wins over the Celtics and Mavericks. Third-year guard Bennedict Mathurin has spurred that offensive surge while averaging 21.6 points per game over his past three games, starting the past two. He is one of four Pacers averaging 15 points per game.
However, head coach Rick Carlisle and Pacers fans may be happiest about the performance of point guard Tyrese Haliburton, who had 25 points and 12 assists in the victory over the Mavericks. It has been a slow start to the season for the two-time All-Star point guard, but Indiana will need him to return to that level to make another deep run this season.
In the meantime, power forward Pascal Siakam has picked up the slack by averaging 20.3 points, seven rebounds, and 5.1 assists while shooting 55.8% from the field this season. He will look to have another big game against the Magic after scoring 26 points and pulling down rebounds in the first meeting.
Magic vs. Pacers Prediction
With victories over last season's NBA finalists in two of its past three games, Indiana will return home will a lot of momentum.
Without Banchero, it will be difficult for Orlando to keep up offensively in this one. Orlando is also 1-5 on the road this season, so I like the Pacers to win at home tonight, where it went 26-15 last season.
Siakam will lead the way, as he has scored 21 points in three of his past four games. In that span, he is averaging 23.5 points per game and 16.2 field goal attempts. Siakam has shot 50% from the field in each of the past three seasons, and that volume will give him the opportunity for another game with 20-plus points.
However, I will be backing Suggs for Orlando as Indiana is 25th among NBA defenses in points allowed to point guards. Suggs has scored 15 points in five of his last six games and each of his previous two against the Pacers. That should continue tonight as he tries to keep his team in the game.
Pick: Pascal Siakam Over 20.5 points + Jalen Suggs 15 points + Pacers ML (+246, FanDuel)
