Mavericks vs. Hawks Preview

Last night, the Mavericks saw their four-game winning streak come to an end as they fell 123-118 to the Heat in overtime. They will look to start a new streak tonight in Atlanta. However, they will do so on the second end of a back-to-back and playing their third game in four nights for a trip that began in Denver.

Despite the travel schedule, Dallas has started to click offensively. It ranks fifth in offensive rating over the past games. Even more impressive is the fact that three of those games have without star Luka Doncic. Dallas has scored at least 118 points in each of its last four games.

Without his running mate, Kyrie Irving has taken on the primary playmaking responsibilities. He has recorded six assists in each of his last five games. He is averaging 21.8 points and 6.2 assists per game in that span.

Meanwhile, P.J. Washington can be inconsistent at times, however he has stepped up of late. He has scored over 20 points and had a double-double in the last three games that Doncic has missed. Atlanta is allowing 21 points and 10 rebounds per game to power forwards, giving his points + rebounds line a ton of value tonight.

Irving and Washington will benefit against a Hawks that is 22nd in defensive rating and 28th in both points and assists allowed per game. That has contributed to a 7-10 record thus far. While the Hawks struggle to get stops at times, they rank 10th in points per game. One player who has continued his upward trajectory is forward Jalen Johnson.

The 22-year-old is averaging 19.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. He has increased those averages in each of his first four seasons. More recently, he has scored 20 points in seven of his last 10 games while averaging 21.3 points per game. However, he should be able to fill up the stat sheet against Dallas overall, as the Mavericks rank 26th in rebounds allowed and 21st in assists allowed.

That also sets up for Trae Young well, who is averaging 11.7 assists per game and leads the league in that department. A few of Johnson's baskets tonight will be assisted by Young.

Mavericks vs. Hawks Prediction

Despite Dallas playing its third game in recent days, the oddsmakers are still expecting a high-scoring game at a total of 237. points. Both teams rank in the top-10 in points per game, while Atlanta is playing at the fastest pace in the league. However, instead of taking a side on the total, I prefer to focus on the players that I expect to contribute to those points going on the scoreboard, and I have a keen eye on the matchup between Johnson and Washington.

Jalen Johnson has nine double-doubles and one triple-double in 16 games this season. Dallas is 27th in rebounds allowed per game to power forwards, and he has recorded 12 rebounds in four of his last five games. He also has had four assists in nine of his last 10 games. When you combine that with his scoring, he has cleared his points + rebounds + assists line in eight of his last 10 games.

During that span, he's averaged 37.4 PRA, with at least 35 in all eight overs.

PJ Washington has history against Atlanta, dating back to his time with Charlotte. He has cleared his points + rebounds line in each of his last four games against the Hawks. Additionally, without Doncic, he has cleared this line in his last three games while averaging 36.6 PR in those games.

Meanwhile, Irving has recorded six assists in six straight games, and seven of his last eight games. Trae Young has had 11 assists in six of his last 10 games. Both Irving and Young should be in good position to pick up assists tonight.

Best Bet: Jalen Johnson Over 32.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-110, ESPNBet)

Same Game Parlay: Jalen Johnson Over 32.5 Points, Rebounds & Assists, PJ Washington Over 23.5 Points & Rebounds, Kyrie Irving Over 5.5 Assists, Trae Young Over 10.5 Assists (+611)
