NBA Player Props for Saturday, February 8
- Anthony Davis Under 38.5 Points, Rebounds, & Assists (-110)
- Carlton Carrington Under 20.5 Points, Rebounds, & Assists (-125)
Anthony Davis draws a difficult matchup in his first game with Dallas. Houston is top 6 in defensive rating and points allowed per game. They've held centers to the 3rd-fewest points, 5th-fewest rebounds, and 2nd-fewest assists per game. The Rockets have limited teams to the fewest assists and the 8th-fewest rebounds on the season. They're tied for the league lead in rebounding rate.
Davis will be playing as a power forward alongside Daniel Gafford at times. Houston has also performed well against PFs. I'm expecting Gafford's presence to limit Davis on the glass.
Gafford has dominated rebounding opportunities since Dereck Lively went down, averaging 20.2 rebound chances per game. Davis was at 19.4 rebound chances per game with the Lakers, well ahead of 2nd place (LeBron James at 11.8). Gafford will be providing much more competition for rebounds than Davis has experienced this season.
Davis was banged up at the end of his time with LA, so he might not be ready for a full allotment of minutes in his debut.
Pick: Anthony Davis Under 38.5 Points, Rebounds, & Assists (-110)
This seems like a good sell-high opportunity on Carlton Carrington. I grabbed this prop at 17.5 yesterday with the expectation that Washington's trade deadline acquisitions wouldn't be ready to join the team. That's exactly how it played out, with the exception of A.J. Johnson, who played 9 minutes. Carrington needed a garbage time 3-pointer to go over his line, but he played a hefty 36 minutes. The Wizards basically only played 7 players.
The situation tonight could be entirely different. Washington could basically double their available bodies. Justin Champagnie, Malcolm Brogdon, and Alex Sarr could all return from injury. Khris Middleton, Marcus Smart, Alex Len, and Colby Jones could make their team debuts. Outside of Len, all of those players would affect Carrington's production. Aside from Len and Sarr, all of them could hurt Carrington's minutes.
January might be a good barometer for Carrington's expectations tonight. He averaged 29 MPG, posting 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists. He started 13 of 17 games. February has been a whirlwind. Carrington's minutes collapsed to 14 and 12 in the final 2 games before the trade deadline, with Washington auditioning Brogdon and Kyle Kuzma for trade suitors.
He's played 35 and 36 minutes over the past 2 games with the Wizards missing several rotation players either due to injury or trade. Those January numbers seem like a fair middle ground.
Atlanta is a nice matchup, but they've put up more of a fight on defense lately. The Hawks rank 11th in defensive rating over the past 10 games. They're 1st in pace, so it's still a solid spot, and the line reflects it. The books just seem to be over-projecting the workload for Carrington with Washington likely adding more players to the rotation.
Pick: Carlton Carrington Under 20.5 Points, Rebounds, & Assists (-125)
