Brooklyn Nets vs Indiana Pacers NBA Preview
This is a Brooklyn-or-nothing spot, which is mildly tempting if Tyrese Haliburton sits, but I'll pass on the spread. The Nets, as much as they tend to cover, have only two wins this month.
The Pacers are coming off a hard-fought, fast-paced 135-131 win over the Mavericks. This is a winnable game against Brooklyn, and they're nine-point favorites, but the Pacers are also a league-worst 2-8-1 against the spread on no rest. Additionally, they're 7-11-1 with a rest disadvantage, and tonight they have one because the Nets lost to the Celtics on Tuesday and were off Wednesday.
Brooklyn is 12-7 against the spread with a rest advantage, additionally, they covered in six of their last eight games, including in three double-digit spreads in which they lost by eight or fewer. The Nets haven't lost by double figures since their encounter with the Spurs on March 4. The Pacers only covered in one of their last eight games, and it wasn't last night while -10.5-point favorites.
Injury-wise, Brooklyn will be without the Cam's. Cam Johnson is resting and Cam Thomas is done for the season. Tyrese Haliburton sat Wednesday with a back injury, leaving the door open to play Thursday against Brooklyn. If you told me he’s sitting, I’d like Brooklyn to cover the +9, but no spread play for me if Hali is out there. This feels like a trap, but the entire slate this entire month feels like a trap.
Myles Turner's scoring prop is listed at 15.5 points. He's gone over this number against Nic Claxton… once? Ever? These two faced off nine times in their careers, Claxton has played 23-31 minutes in each of his last eight games. Turner has scored over 11 points just twice in their nine meetings, getting 14 in January 2022 and 23 in November 2022.
Turner has also cleared this line only once in his last six games overall — and he's had the matchups to do it.
Under against the Mavs, who are still really injured, and in a game where the Pacers scored 135 points — he had nine. Under against the Bulls, who've allowed the second-most made twos and sixth-highest percentage of makes from two-point range. Under against the Hawks, who allow the NBA's third-best field goal percentage from the field — they're second-worst at guarding threes and fifth-worst at guarding twos.
The Nets are fourth-worst in the latter and seventh worst in the former.
Look, betting in the NBA in March is rough. You don't know who is going to play on a nightly basis, and we're in silly season where Jaylin Williams can get his second triple-double in a month off the strength of opportunity and… the Sixers.
But the trends say under for Turner, unless we get a miraculous (that might be overdoing it) bounce-back performance against a dude he's never even taken 12 shots against.
