Rockets vs. Warriors Preview
Huge matchup. The Rockets clinch the 2-seed with a win. The Warriors are looking for homecourt in the first round. Can anything slow down Golden State? Can anything get in the Houston Rockets’ bullying way?
Let's take a look at some trends:
- The Rockets lost to the Warriors in their previous matchup. Under Ime Udoka, Houston is 29-17 (63%) ATS against teams after losing the previous matchup. It’s hard to beat Houston twice in a row.
- The Warriors are just 5-4-1 since the Butler trade at home ATS. Good, not amazing.
- Golden State forces many turnovers. The Rockets are just 11th in turnover rate, though, and Golden State is 5-7 SU and ATS against teams with below-league-average turnover rates.
- Houston does well vs. high three-point volume teams; they are 11-5 as a dog against teams that average above league average in three-pointers made per game.
- Houston is 31-16 SU, 27-20 (57%) ATS when Amen Thompson and Jabari Smith Jr. play.
Amen Thompson is what you would build in a lab if you wanted to build a player to chase Steph around. He’s excellent at getting over screens and is one of the best closeout artists in the league with the best points per possession mark allowed on spot-up attempts this season, minimum 250 shots defended.
The Rockets have the size to counter the Warriors. Their two-big lineup with Aleperen Sengun and Steven Adams has been terrific, but may not be playable here. However, all of their lineups are still big (if Jabari Smith, questionable with an ankle injury, can go).
The key in this one is Brandin Podziemski, who has 54 points across the last two massive Warriors wins. If Jalen Green and Aaron Holiday can slow down his scoring, the Rockets can handle the Warriors’ offense.
I project this game Warriors -3.1 so I like Houston to cover the spread, and possibly even win outright tonight.
