Spurs vs. Hawks Preview

On Monday night, Trae Young hit a game-winning jumper with 0.7 seconds left, lifting the Hawks to a 132-130 victory over the Pistons. Young recorded 34 points and nine assists, helping Atlanta snap an eight-game losing streak. Tonight, they return home to take on the Spurs, who are riding high for different reasons.

In the 2023 NBA Draft, the Spurs landed a transformative talent by selecting Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick. Just a year and a half later, they may have already found his long-term running mate. Days after De'Aaron Fox stated that San Antonio was his preferred destination, the Spurs acquired him in a blockbuster three-team trade on Sunday night.

Fox will make his Spurs debut tonight. Prior to the trade, he was averaging 25 points, five rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game with the Kings this season. Though the Spurs made the deal with long-term goals in mind, making the playoffs this season is not out of the question. San Antonio enters this game three games out of the final play-in spot in the Western Conference. However, it has lost seven of its last 10 games.

In that span, San Antonio ranks 28th in defensive rating. That is one area where Fox may not contribute much, but Wembanyama certainly does. Wembanyama leads the league with 3.9 blocks per game and ranks eighth with 10.9 rebounds per game. However, he also leads the Spurs in scoring, averaging 24.6 points per game. He has scored at least 20 points in six straight games.

Spurs vs. Hawks Prediction

When the Hawks are involved, you know there will be a lot of possessions, as they rank second in pace. The Spurs are not exactly slow, as they rank 13th in pace as well. The first meeting between these teams produced 259 points. Although that game went to overtime, the total for that game (233.5) was surpassed in regulation, and tonight’s total nearly did as well.

That marked the eighth time in the last 10 meetings that the Over has hit. Five of those games also reached at least 244 points. Additionally, the Over has hit in eight of the Spurs' last 10 games and in each of the Hawks’ last three games, with all three going over 250 points.

That was before the Spurs added an All-Star caliber player to the mix in Fox. We will see the new-look Spurs rotation tonight, but if he plays 30 minutes, there is a good chance he scores 20 points. Fox has scored at least 20 points in five of his last seven games against the Hawks, including 31 and 28 in two matchups this season.

Wembanyama also torched the Hawks for 42 points in December and comes into this matchup having scored at least 25 points in three of his last five games. The Hawks rank 28th in scoring defense, which should work in favor of both Fox and Wembanyama.

Meanwhile, Young is coming off back-to-back performances of 34 points and 17 assists, followed by 34 points and nine assists. He has scored 36 points in two of his last three games against San Antonio while recording at least 13 assists in all three. The points he generates tonight should help his points + assists line. He has recorded at least 38 combined points and assists in five of his last seven games against the Spurs.

Best Bet: Over 242.5 Points (-108, DraftKings)
