Victor Wembanyama lived up to the hype and showed historic potential during his rookie season. However, San Antonio wisely did not rush the process through radical offseason moves. Instead, they were content with another high lottery pick in the 2025 Draft and merely brought in veterans who could help Wemby develop, such as Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes.
It’s a great long-term plan given how loaded this upcoming draft will be, but their immediate production is below par. The Spurs own a 1-3 record, and they have not reached 110 points in a game yet.
Their matchup against the Thunder last night was particularly sluggish. Wemby was held to 6 points, San Antonio turned the ball over 22 times, and they shot 41.2% from the field. Fortunately, Utah’s defense is not remotely close to OKC’s level.
To trade or not to trade Lauri Markkanen. Utah flirted with that earth-shattering move before ultimately deciding to keep and extend the All-Star. They must hope that he doesn’t hurt their tank too much. Markkanen opened the season by scoring 35 points on 15 shots, but the star has shot just 29.7% from the field over his past three games.
Meanwhile, sophomore Taylor Hendricks suffered a gruesome leg injury last game. The former ninth overall pick will likely miss the rest of the season.
Walker Kessler has seemingly bounced back from an up-and-down second season, while Keyonte George cannot find an offensive rhythm at the moment.
Overall, the Jazz are a bit of a mixed bag in terms of their offense. They should fluctuate between bottom-dweller and play-in team production all season.
Spurs vs. Jazz
Betting Pick & Prediction
San Antonio upgraded their supplementary defensive pieces by adding Stephon Castle and veterans during the offseason. With Wemby anchoring the unit, the Spurs are surprisingly competent on that end of the floor and currently rank 12th in defensive rating. They have the ability to slow down an inconsistent Jazz offense here, especially if Markkanen's back injury limits or sidelines him.
Although the Spurs' offense is a bit rocky right now, it's a perfect bounce back spot. Utah's perimeter defense needs plenty of work, and they just lost Taylor Hendricks' defensive playmaking and length.
Look for Wemby to take out his frustrations from the Thunder game against this porous Jazz defense. San Antonio's pick-and-roll offense should produce some great looks throughout this one.
