Phoenix Suns vs Memphis Grizzlies NBA Tuesday Preview

The Suns are in the Bad Place. What once was a season where they hoped a change in coaching and some minor roster adjustments would put them in title contention has gone completely awry.

Since the trade deadline, where Kevin Durant was at least possibly on the move, and Phoenix did nothing else of note, the Suns are 2-5, with three of those losses as a favorite. They are 2-8 since the start of February and just lost by 18 to the Raptors.

Not a good time to catch the Grizzlies coming off a loss. Should you buy the big dip with Phoenix, or will the Grizzlies handle business?

Neither team has significant injuries in this one, a welcome change for both squads.

Phoenix isn’t good offensively, but it’s way worse defensively, ranking 26th schedule-adjusted.

In particular, Phoenix is seventh-worst in transition defense per Synergy Sports. That’s a problem vs. a Memphis team that spends 25 percent of their possessions, the most in the NBA, in transition offensively.

The Grizzlies are 21-6 straight up and 18-9 ATS this season at home, while the Suns are 11-19 SU and ATS on the road.

Memphis shreds bad defenses. They are 3rd in point differential vs. bottom-10 defenses per Cleaning The Glass at +15, and No.1 in spread differential in those games.

Memphis is top-10 in both offense and defense this season. The Suns are the third-worst team in the entire league vs. teams top-10 in offense and defense this season, getting beat by 19.5 points and failing to cover the spread by 11.6 points. They are 0-5 against those teams.

But wait, that’s not all!

Memphis is coming off a tough loss to the Cavs in a well-played game Sunday. This season when at home coming off a loss, the Grizzlies are 9-2 straight up and ATS, and have covered by 11.4 points per game.

You think I’m out of pro-Memphis numbers? Because I’m not.

The Suns are -3.8 in spread differential this season. Memphis this season is 13-5 SU and ATS against teams with a -2 spread differential or worse. Memphis on the other hand is an above-average ATS team. The Suns this year are 10-21-1 (32.3%) ATS against those teams.

Kevin Durant has done well vs. the Grizzlies in his matchups, even this season. He’s over 25 in three of his last four games against Memphis. However, the Suns are 2-0 to the under on their team total vs. Memphis this season.

Their team total is 118.5, my projections make it 116.5. I don’t want the total under because Memphis is an overall over team (because at home they score a lot and hold you to a little).

I can’t find any way to back Phoenix here. I’d rather not buy into such an easy, obvious “Suns bad, Grizzlies good” angle, but the number, matchup, and everything backs a Memphis smash spot.

Don’t try to catch the falling knife. Let it continue to shred the Suns’ season and play Memphis. But we can do an inverse-correlated same game parlay here.

Durant scores 25+, because he always gets his, the Suns go under their 118.5 team total, and Memphis covers. The payout for that at DraftKings is +390. That’s my best bet.

Suns vs Grizzlies Best Bet

  • Grizzlies -7.5 (-110)

Suns vs Grizzlies Parlay Picks

  • Kevin Durant 25+ Points
  • Suns Team Total Under 118.5
  • Grizzlies -7.5

Parlay Payout: +390
