Sunday brings us a clash of the East Bubble's bottom tier. Can the Nets hold off the Wizards as they vie for the honor of playing the Bucks in the first round?
Washington Wizards
The Wizards will once again be without Bradley Beal, John Wall, and Davis Bertans. In the Wizards loss to the Suns on Friday, we learned how they were going to deal with the massive usage rates both Beal and Bertans had this season.
Rui Hachimura played well in expanded minutes and this is a trend that will continue against the Nets. He was trusted to run the offense more and dramatically outpaced his prior season averages.
Expect the Wizards to get out in transition to make up for their lack of elite talent as they try to catch the Nets off guard. Per Cleaning the Glass, when Beal and Bertans are off the Court, the Wizards started a possession in transition on 15.4% of plays and they added 4.1 points per 100 possessions in that situation.
Per NBA.com, last game the Wizards had a 108 pace, which was nearly five possessions more than their season average. Look for this young team to run the floor and push the pace.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets will still be without their main stars (Dinwiddie, Irving, Jordan, Durant) and it's uncertain whether newcomer Jamal Crawford will be ready to play in this matchup.
The Nets played poorly against the Magic in their first game inside the Bubble and were really only saved from an embarrassing 28-point loss because the Magic pulled off their starters.
In the first half, they did not play particularly fast, but per NBA.com the Nets had a -22.4 Net Rating. This is abysmal.
One change the Nets made to make the game close was they dramatically increased their pace of play from sub 100 in the first half to a blistering 110 in the second half. Per Cleaning the Glass, the Nets are extremely efficient at scoring the basketball in transition — expect them to lean on pushing the pace.
Betting Analysis & Pick
Both teams are without their top stars. I think they both will push the pace to make up for the lack of elite talent on the floor.
The PICK: Over 234.5. Would bet to 236.5.
