Following a run to the Sweet 16 which included a signature moment with a big-time shot, Purdue's Jaden Ivey has emerged as the biggest liability to win the 2022 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player award.
Ivey's odds are among the biggest movers following the first two rounds. The Boilermakers guard opened at +2500 but is now +1200 at BetMGM. Ivey scored 22 points in the opening round against Yale and added another 18 in a win over Texas. Ivey scored seven points in the final three minutes, including the dagger three-pointer to put Purdue ahead 77-71 with 1:03 remaining.
The path to winning the award involves making a run to a national championship, and Purdue's lane is wide open. With No. 1 Baylor and No. 2 Kentucky already out of the region, Purdue must get by longshot Saint Peters and then the winner of No. 8 North Carolina and No. 4 UCLA.
Arizona's Christian Koloko is also on the move, dropping to +1800 from his opening number of +6600. While bettors are pounding Ivey to win the award, Koloko is getting almost no action. Most of the attention on Arizona is going to guard Benedict Mathurin (+800), who is third in total handle in the market.
Kansas guard Ochai Agbaji opened the tournament as the biggest liability and remains a popular play as his odds have dropped from +1700 to +900.
Gonzaga big man Drew Timme remains the betting favorite, as the Bulldogs are still favored to win the tournament. Timme's monster second-half propelled Gonzaga past Memphis in the second round. Timme scored 25 against Memphis and 32 against Georgia State in the first round.
March 17 Update
The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the betting favorites to cut down the nets for the 2022 NCAA Tournament, so it's no surprise two of their stars have the shortest odds to win Most Outstanding Player.
Drew Timme (+500) and Chet Holmgren (+900) are the favorites at BetMGM, with Holmgren the more popular bet of the two. Timme put up 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during the regular season. Holmgren, a freshman considered one of the top NBA prospects in college basketball, averaged 14 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting 61 percent from the field and blocking over three shots per game.
Top players from popular teams are obviously the targets. Arizona leading scorer Bennedict Mathurin is tied on the oddsboard with Holmgren, ahead of Kentucky's double-double machine Oscar Tshiebwe (+1100).
Then we get to the most popular pick, according to data released by BetMGM. Kansas guard Ochai Agbaji has taken more bets than any other player to win the award at +1700 odds. Agbaji averaged 19.7 points per game during the season for the No. 1 seed Jayhawks.
The other two liabilities for the sportsbook come from the Big Ten.
Iowa's Keegan Murray (+2200) has taken the most money in the market with 20 percent of the handle. Purdue's Jaden Ivey (+2500) isn't far behind with 17 percent of the total handle.
