Two teams that must be somewhat surprised to find themselves tied for first place in the Pac-12 will face off Thursday as Oregon hosts Arizona State. Both teams hold a 5-2 record through seven games in conference play, and now have hopes of remaining in contention for the final two months of the season.
Arizona State is ranked 102nd by KenPom, but it has held up well against some of the best teams on its schedule. The Sun Devils are 3-3 against top-75 opponents this season, including impressive wins over Utah and Colorado. Away games have at times been a treacherous spot for Arizona State, as it is 2-2 away from home with losses to San Diego and Washington.
Oregon looked like one of the premier teams in the Pac-12 through the first five games of conference play before back-to-back losses at Colorado and Utah. The Ducks are an impressive 9-0 this year at home, so this will be a difficult spot for the Sun Devils to get a road win.
Arizona State Sun Devils
Arizona State's biggest strength is its defense. The Sun Devils rank 38th nationally in defensive efficiency, they force turnovers on 20% of their opponents' offensive possessions and their guards are capable of making life extremely hard on the other backcourt.
This team takes on the mentality of its coach, Bobby Hurley, and it likes to play fast and pressure ball-handlers. The Sun Devils rank 89th in tempo, and they like to run and gun.
Arizona State has two big vulnerabilities: shooting and rebounding. The Sun Devils make just 31% of their shots from beyond the arc. They are even worse on the boards, ranking 352nd in offensive rebounding and 255th in preventing offensive rebounds.
Oregon Ducks
Oregon, meanwhile, is one of the best shooting teams in the country. The Ducks make 38% of their shots from 3-point range, the 30th-best mark in college basketball.
However, they let opponents shoot nearly as well from 3 as they do. Oregon allows its opposition to shoot 35% from deep on considerable volume (36% of opposing teams' shots come from outside).
Those numbers make for games with extremely high variance. If Oregon is hot, it can beat anyone. If Oregon is cold and its opponent is hot, it can lose to anyone. The good news is that the Sun Devils do not have the type of offense that can take advantage of the openings the Ducks give them.
Oregon also forces a lot of steals, ranking 14th in the country in steal rate. It may be able to take advantage of Arizona State's quick pace and win the turnover battle.
