My Auburn vs Texas College Basketball Betting Preview
It hasn't mattered where or who Auburn has played. The Tigers are blowing teams out, looking like the best and most complete squad in the country in the process.
Bruce Pearl's unit hasn't been involved in a single-digit result since its loss at Duke in early December and its last single-digit victory was at the end of November in Maui against Iowa State.
In fact, the Tigers have beaten opponents by 31 points per game since that defeat at Cameron Indoor.
Meanwhile, Texas lost all three of its Quad 1 games and has just one Quad 2 victory — a win over NC State. Most importantly, the Longhorns' upcoming four-game stretch is brutal. They face the top two teams in the country at home in back-to-back games before dueling Oklahoma and Florida.
That's life in the SEC, and it doesn't help that this team has pretty similar wings in Arthur Kaluma, Tre Johnson and Tramon Mark.
Also, Texas does its best defensive work shutting down teams inside. It likely won't stand a chance matching up with Johni Broome, though — plus, Auburn has a plethora of weapons and shoots 3s at nearly 38%.
What I keep coming back to is the fact that the Tigers have played just one true road game all season, and that game was the aforementioned loss to Duke.
Now Duke is the most talented team — on paper — in the country, so the loss itself isn't concerning. But I still don't think beating opponents by 30 points is sustainable long-term, no matter how good a team is. These are kids we're talking about, and the emotions of SEC play will result in losses, close games and tough road environments.
However, Texas relies heavily on a freshman who's playing in his second SEC game against a top-two team. Auburn also has waves of depth that the Longhorns can't match.
While Bart Torvik has this spread closer to 10, Haslametrics has this spread near 18 (!). I'm more in line with the latter based on the play of these two teams this season, Auburn's depth and talent level and the fact that the Longhorns haven't been competitive in any of their biggest tests.
