Butler vs Boise State College Basketball Betting Preview
I have a tough time imagining how Butler gets stops.
Boise State leverages its bevy of frontcourt positional size to post and roll its way to points.
While Butler has plenty of size, the Bulldogs’ drop-coverage defense has been inefficient against opposing posters (.94 PPP allowed, 20th percentile, per Synergy) and rollers (1.10 PPP allowed, 26th percentile, per Synergy) — they also can’t stay in front of the dribble (.83 PPP allowed, 26th percentile, per Synergy).
To make matters worse, Jahmyl Telfort has been scratched for the rest of the Crown. While he has his issues, he’s among the team’s more effective defenders, especially with his length and switchability on the perimeter.
Without the 6-foot-7 Telfort, the Bulldogs must play much smaller with the 6-foot-4 Evan Haywood at the two. That’s a challenging task when matching up with the Broncos.
On the other end of the court, Butler spends most of the time mismatch hunting with its wings in isolation, dribble handoff and ball-screen actions.
I’m not entirely sold on Boise State’s individual defenders hanging in these one-on-one actions, but I’m also not sure how Butler’s offense will look without Telfort as the top option (I admittedly didn’t watch Monday’s game against Utah, but I have a hard time imagining the Bulldogs re-create that 86-point performance).
All that said, I think the market has overreacted to Telfort’s injury. The fair line could be closer to three or four if he were in, but now it’s floated up to Boise State -8.5.
But I can’t trust the Telfort-less Bulldogs in a tough schematic battle.
I’m staying away from this game, but I’d lay the points with the Broncos if forced to pick a side.
