BYU vs Arizona State College Basketball Betting Preview

BYU is one of the hottest teams in America in the past 30 days or so. The Cougars have rattled off four straight wins and have won and covered eight of the past 10 contests.

The former road woes are long behind them, as they’ve taken down the likes of Colorado, UCF, West Virginia and Arizona away from Provo.

They get a short travel from Tucson over to Tempe on Wednesday to face an Arizona State squad that’s lost six of its last seven.

BYU crushed the full-strength Sun Devils back in December, winning by 20 in Provo. The Cougars dominated the glass, scored at will inside and limited Arizona State to 0.86 points per possession.

Arizona State has been hampered by absences all season, and though it just got Jayden Quaintance back, star guard BJ Freeman was just dismissed from the team.

The Cougars’ shooting is their greatest offensive weapon. They lead the Big 12 in 3-point attempt rate and rank second in 3-point percentage. Arizona State has allowed a high rate of triples this season, and BYU launched 32 against the Sun Devils in the first meeting this season.

Perhaps the bigger edge for the Cougars, though, is on the interior.

BYU leads the league in field goal percentage inside the arc and ranks 22nd nationally in field goal percentage at the rim. Arizona State ranks 12th in the Big 12 in 2-point field goal percentage allowed, and even with Quaintance back, it can still be a sieve at the rim and on the glass.

Arizona State’s offense just doesn’t have the juice to punish BYU on its defensive end, by far the weaker side for these Cougars. And no Freeman means even less creation off the bounce and less shooting.

If the Sun Devils can’t get out in transition, they won't score. And getting out in transition will be a major challenge while trying to protect the defensive glass.

The Cougars will keep it rolling and climb higher up the Big Dance S-curve.
