Clemson vs Virginia College Basketball Betting Preview

Clemson plays mainly through the post on offense, with Ian Schieffelin and Viktor Lakhin running bully-ball sets at the rim.

While Virginia has had a tough year, the Cavaliers are still a borderline-elite post defense behind the 6-foot-10 center trio of Blake Buchanan, Anthony Robinson and Jacob Cofie (.70 PPP allowed, 95th percentile, per Synergy).

While their overall interior defense isn’t good, they mostly struggle to defend the dribble, so I think their defense can hang tough with the Tigers at home.

Virginia doesn’t have many dribble creators on the other end of the court, preferring to play mostly secondary-based attack-and-kick ball from the perimeter.

That could be a problem against Clemson’s drop-coverage defense, which is elite in catch-and-shoot denial (20th-fewest catch-and-shoot jumpers allowed per game, 20th nationally, per Synergy) and forces opponents into on-ball middle-of-the-floor creation.

Therefore, I wouldn’t be surprised to see both squads struggle to generate half-court offense.

And this game will be played entirely in the half-court. These are two of the slowest-paced teams nationally — neither gets out in transition, and both are elite in transition denial.

Therefore, I expect a low-possession, low-scoring rock fight, and I'll happily take the under.
