Louisiana Tech vs. Richmond
By Sean Paul
I just don’t really understand the line here. Richmond has leaked oil consistently this year, dropping three games to teams vastly worse than Louisiana Tech — Marist, Charlotte and Bucknell.
The Spiders' lone win over a D-I foe is a four-point victory over Maine.
The Bulldogs' offense is amongst the best at the mid-major level. They feature a trio of dominant scorers — forward Daniel Batcho and guards Kaden Cooper and Amaree Abram — who thrive off great looks from Sean Newman Jr.
KenPom gives the Bulldogs an eight-point edge, and that’s an edge I agree with.
I can’t find an angle that doesn’t favor Louisiana Tech.
Pick: Louisiana Tech -4.5 (Play to -6.5)
Grand Canyon vs. Stanford
By John Feltman
I faded Stanford on Saturday night, and it took a 10-point second-half comeback and a late game-winning bucket with less than two seconds to play for it to pull off a road win at Santa Clara.
Stanford and Grand Canyon play a neutral-site contest at Acrisure Arena tonight.
I love this Grand Canyon team, and I think it's only going to get better as the season progresses. The Lopes have a lot working in their favor tonight, including a massive experience advantage.
Stanford is an improved squad, but it enter tonight's game with a 196th strength of schedule ranking. Opponents are only shooting 27% from deep against the Cardinal thus far, so it is safe to say they have been fortunate.
The Lopes are 3-2, but I like their matchup tonight. They thrive on earning trips to the line and given how often Stanford fouls, I expect them to get to the charity stripe a lot tonight.
Their offense is off to a slow start, but with Tyon Grant-Foster back in the mix, the Lopes should begin to generate better scoring opportunities.
Opponents have also torched them from the outside, which bodes well for a Stanford team that has shooting regression coming its way.
Despite the height disadvantage, the Lopes should be able to generate scoring opportunities inside and attack the soft Stanford interior defense. However, the Lopes need to cut down on turnovers, which has been a lingering issue since the beginning of the year.
If they can generate trips to the line and get that opposing shooting regression, I find this to be an excellent sell-high spot, and I expect the Lopes to get the job done tonight on a neutral court.
Pick: Grand Canyon -1.5 (Play to -2)
Rutgers vs. Notre Dame
Both of these teams enter the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas coming off of disappointing losses to mid-majors.
Rutgers fell to Kennesaw State by two on the road, and Notre Dame was beaten by Elon on its home floor.
I think Notre Dame is more ripe to bounce back here and has some matchup advantages in this game.
Rutgers has two extremely talented freshmen in Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey but this team still has plenty of gelling to do.
I expect the Scarlet Knights to be very formidable come February and March, but it is going to take Steve Pikiell time to get all these pieces to play well together.
Meanwhile, for the Irish, the second half against Elon was disturbing, but before that, Notre Dame had looked impressive, particularly in a 21-point road win at Georgetown.
The Irish have far more shooting that they did a year ago, and Markus Burton can get into the lane and make plays for others.
Ultimately, I view Notre Dame as the more polished offensive team at this juncture, and I would guess that Micah Shrewsberry laid into his team after the Elon game. Expect a spirited effort from the jump from the Irish in this one.
Give me Notre Dame to cover and win as a short underdog in a game I actually make it a small favorite in.
Pick: Notre Dame +2 (Play to PK)
