Villanova vs. Saint Joe's
By Sean Paul
If you asked me to pick two of the five biggest disappointments through the first week of the season, I’d easily come up with Villanova and Saint Joseph’s as two of the three.
The Philly teams haven’t come to play yet, as the Hawks dropped a buy game to Central Connecticut State, and probably should’ve lost to Navy. That’s the obligatory Q4 loss for Billy Lange, though.
I have a lot less faith in Kyle Neptune, who didn’t appear super worried after Villanova lost as heavy favorites to Columbia. I never loved Villanova’s roster since it has scorers — Eric Dixon and Wooga Poplar — and not much else.
The guard play leaves a lot to be desired. Jhamir Brickus and Tyler Perkins are probably the third and fourth best guards in this Big 5 showdown.
Dixon is clearly the best player in the game, but Saint Joe’s interior tandem of Rasheer Fleming and Justice Ajogbor has the ability to tame Dixon’s scoring.
The Hawks' offense is too talented to shoot sub 30% from 3 much longer. Both Xzayvier Brown and Erik Reynolds II are two elite shooters who are hitting 20% and 28% from 3 through two games.
That won’t last, and once it turns around, the Hawks will be the team everyone dreamt of them being.
I think that’ll start tonight in Philly.
Pick: Saint Joe's ML +130 (Play to +110)
North Florida vs. Georgia
Hard to believe I’m saying this, but the North Florida Ospreys are one of the stories of the young college basketball season. North Florida is not just 3-0, but did so against a difficult schedule.
The Ospreys boast two wins in true road environments against power conference foes! The Ospreys kicked off the season with a road win at South Carolina, then smoked Charleston Southern before winning on the road at Georgia Tech (and scoring 105 points on the Yellow Jackets, for good measure).
This line opened at 10.5 and shot up, likely on the backs of bettors expecting the North Florida parade to stop.
Call me crazy, but I’m sticking with the Ospreys. Neither of their two big wins felt like smoke and mirrors. In those games, North Florida shot under 35% from deep, while facing pretty solid shooting from USC and Tech. Georgia Tech shot 13-of-29 from outside the arc and still couldn’t hang with the Ospreys.
This is simply a high quality mid-major team that is fully capable of hanging with Georgia. KenPom has this spread at just 10, leaving plenty of wiggle room with the current spread.
Pick: North Florida +14.5
