If you're not a follower of SoCon hoops, you're going to love this one! Two of the preseason favorites in this conference find themselves in the mix for the regular season crown entering February.
UNC Greensboro comes into this game with two conference losses while Furman has three. This will be a close battle from the jump, and it's going to be an interesting battle of opposing styles.
UNCG has one of the best and more consistent defenses in the entire mid-major landscape. Meanwhile, Furman has one of the higher-ceiling offenses in the entire mid-major landscape.
Here's UNC Greensboro vs. Furman odds and a pick for Sunday.
UNC Greensboro had a successful 6-2 January, but it had a really ugly home loss to Mercer last week. The Spartans followed that up with a close win against one of the worst teams in the entire nation in VMI.
Mikeal Brown-Jones and the Langley brothers form one of more effective backcourts among the mid-majors. The Langley brothers have been dealing with a few lingering injures but have seen recent game action. Their statuses seem certain for today, but they haven't looked 100% of late.
Kobe and Keyshaun are the backbone of this UNCG squad, and the Spartans will need them at their best to slow down this fast-paced Furman offense.
From what we saw lately, I'm not entirely sure the Spartans in peak form to slow down a fire-powered offense on the road. UNCG's livelihood in this matchup will depend on this duo, so keep an eye on how they look pre-game and on the court.
You may remember this Furman team from the 2023 NCAA tournament. The Paladins are the squad who knocked off Virginia in the first round after taking advantage of Kihei Clark's errant pass. Although they don't have the entire team from 2023 back, they do have the man who hit the buzzer-beater 3.
JP Pegues is the leader and creator for this Furman team. He has the rare ability to create a shot from anywhere on the floor and get as hot as anyone. Just last game, Pegues hit a buzzer-beating 3 to send Furman into OT at The Citadel and ultimately avoid the upset.
There's all this noise about Pegues, but he's not even the leading scorer for Furman. Senior Marcus Foster averages just under 20 points to lead Furman this season. He's going to be a massive storyline in this game because he'll be asked to create a lot against this physical UNCG defense.
Furman shoots as many 3s as any team in the country and will surely be firing them today.
UNC Greensboro vs. Furman
Betting Pick & Prediction
Both of these teams are coming off shaky recent performances, but I believe this meeting favors the home team.
Furman got itself in a hole against The Citadel last week and finally turned it on and won the game easily. I believe the Paladins had an eye on this game during their trip to The Citadel, and I don't blame them at all for that. This is a revenge game for Furman, as UNCG won the last meeting.
Both teams have paths to success, and we're getting great offense versus great defense. Offense usually prospers in that case. Plus, the offense is at home. Roll with the 'Dins!
