Two of the fastest-rising teams in the country are set to square off in Ames, Iowa on Tuesday.
The Kansas State Wildcats have catapulted themselves into the top five as they've run through the best the Big 12 has to offer. However, their opponents are now held in the same regard, as the Iowa State Cyclones have one of the most impressive resumes in the country.
The Cyclones come into this matchup having lost two of their last three, but sandwiched in between those losses was a dominant victory over Texas.
So, will the Cyclones get back on track, or will the red-hot Wildcats continue their conference-play domination? Let's find out as we dive into this matchup in search of the best bet.
When you look at the Kansas State lineup, it's clear who every opposing team circles.
Markquis Nowell has been on a tear this season, and his hot hand has propelled the Wildcats to massive wins over Baylor and Texas.
However, the Wildcats' biggest victory came over the Kansas Jayhawks, and it was not Nowell who led the way in that game.
Instead, it was his partner in crime Keyontae Johnson.
While Johnson has not gotten the same hype as Nowell, he's actually Kansas State's leading scorer. However, each plays a vital role in the offense, as Johnson is the leading rebounder and Nowell is the team's best distributor.
It will be interesting to see how they contend with the suffocating Cyclones defense. Iowa State is seventh in defensive efficiency and first in the country in turnovers, which is an area of issue for the Wildcats.
In each game that I've broken down Cyclones, I've preached that they are different this year. No longer are they a defensive team that can't put the ball in the bucket.
They have three legitimate scoring threats, and leading the way has been Jaren Holmes. Holmes has come over from St. Bonaventure and has made a significant impact. His ability to penetrate and facilitate has ignited the offense.
The two who have benefitted the most from his skills are Caleb Grill and Gabe Kalscheur. They are each shooting over 41% from the field and have proven they can carry this team if they get hot from beyond the arc.
Holmes' ability to get the ball inside could prove to be a big factor in this matchup, as the Wildcats are substantially undersized.
Whether he kicks it out to the perimeter or drops it off to the big men, the Cyclones should have plenty of open looks.
Kansas State vs Iowa State Betting Pick
This is a very interesting matchup, as these two teams appear to be on a collision course atop the Big 12.
I see them both staying on course in this game, as well.
Iowa State is stout defensively, but Nowell and Johnson have proven to be exceptional scorers. One of them will get rolling, as they've made it a trend to play up to their competition.
As for the Cyclones on offense, they should shake off the rust from their last loss quite well. They get to return home and face a Wildcats team that lacks a rim protector.
With both teams having success on offense and the likelihood that this game is tight down to the wire, I'm taking the over as the Cyclones' defense is being a bit overvalued here.
