As the regular season winds down, we have a couple of Big East teams that have different aspirations. Georgetown travels to Omaha on Wednesday to take on Creighton, which will be looking to bounce back after back-to-back losses.
It's been quite a disappointing season for Patrick Ewing's squad, who still has his job as head basketball coach. It's not that the Hoyas lack talent; it's a combination of dysfunction and lack of leadership that seems to have led to their downfall.
Meanwhile, Creighton will certainly look to bounce back at home here after a rough week of basketball. But I think these losses aren't as bad as they're deemed to be, considering Villanova is a much different team with a healthy Justin Moore.
This spread is projected to be gigantic, and the Hoyas did manage to cover against Creighton back on Feb. 1 in a 63-52 loss as 13.5-point underdogs.
Let's break down both of these Big East foes.
You can't write about the history of college basketball without mentioning the historic Georgetown program. But I can't help but bring up Ewing's coaching job because it's one of the greater mysteries throughout the entire country. Even though he's an all-time Hoyas legend, I just can't put together how he's still the coach.
The statistics also support the poor coaching job, as the Hoyas find themselves in the bottom 200 of almost every category. This includes offense, defense, 3-point percentage, Rim-and-3 Rate, free-throw percentage and rebound rate. It's a complete horror show digging into all of these metrics.
I tried really hard to find some positive components about this Hoyas team, and I will say they should have roughly four more wins on the season, according to ShotQuality. That would still put them at 11 wins, so we honestly wouldn't view them any differently in the market.
Even when you dive into the conference numbers, they really aren't much better than the overall metrics. Without backcourt mates Primo Spears and Brandon Murray, this Hoyas team may be winless.
The only reasonable explanation for betting Georgetown in this spot would be because the number ballooned up extraordinarily.
As someone who is a big-time Creighton believer, I'm not worried in the slightest about the recent losses they've suffered. I still love the body of work this roster has composed, and being led by a great coach in Greg McDermott helps calm the nerves.
If you're a Jays fan, let's all take a moment to take a deep breath and dive into why they're still one of the most dangerous teams in the country.
First off, the top-30 ranks in adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency are absolutely terrific.
The Bluejays are especially elite inside the paint, thanks in part to big man Ryan Kalkbrenner. They also do a terrific job at the charity stripe, ranking 41st in free-throw percentage. While they've struggled a bit from beyond the arc in the last two games, they still find themselves in the middle of the pack overall in that category.
Despite the Hoyas' talented backcourt, the Jays have plenty of guards who are more than capable of outshining their opponents. Trey Alexander, Ryan Nembhard and Baylor Scheierman are all capable of taking a game over.
The only true weakness I find on this Jays roster is their depth. They're 351st in bench minutes, so this could be something to monitor beginning next week at the Big East Tournament.
However, this will not play a factor in this matchup, as the Hoyas also have a thin rotation of their own.
Georgetown vs Creighton Betting Pick
I realize Creighton failed to cover in the first matchup between both of these teams on Feb. 1, and this spread is large once again.
But this could not be a better get-right spot for the Jays.
Returning home against an awful Hoyas team that may have already packed it in for the rest of the season is the true definition of what the doctor ordered.
The Jays should be able to get back on track on the offensive end of the floor, and even if they scuffle a bit, I trust their strong defense to contain the Hoyas offense.
I don't typically like laying a large number of points, especially in college basketball, but this spot is way too good to pass up. Give me the Jays all the way in a game that could get out of hand very quickly.
Pick: Creighton -18.5 (Play to -20) |
