Following back-to-back losses, No. 25 Auburn welcomes Georgia to Neville Arena on Wednesday night for an SEC matchup.
The Tigers are returning home for the first time since their 28-game home winning streak was snapped by Texas A&M. They enter the game with a 16-5 overall record on the season.
Meanwhile, the Bulldogs claimed the victory in the first contest between the two, and they could use another resume-building win to help their postseason hopes.
This is a battle between two highly-motivated teams with strong defenses, and this could be more competitive than the oddsmakers believe.
Coach Mike White’s reign in Athens, Georgia, is off to a solid start, with the Bulldogs owning a 14-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the SEC.
However, they have struggled on the road.
In true road games this season, White’s squad is 1-5, with the lone victory coming at Ole Miss. This is the same team that lost by double figures at Wake Forest, Kentucky and Tennessee.
The win in the first matchup between these two programs came down to Georgia’s solid defense, which has been the theme this year.
The Bulldogs rank inside the top 80 in multiple categories, including AdjD (76th), EFG% (41st) and 3-point defense (18th), according to Bart Torvik.
White’s squad held the Tigers to just 21.4% shooting from beyond the arc and 34.8% from the field in the win, and there needs to be a repeat performance if they want to leave The Jungle with a victory.
As someone who hasn’t been too high on Auburn, the last two games showcased some of the limitations that Bruce Pearl’s team has.
The troubling part of the losses was the poor defensive showings.
The Tigers allowed 79 to the Aggies before West Virginia dropped 80 on them in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Both offenses were also spearheaded by a star player that couldn’t be contained.
Against A&M, Tyrece Radford scored 30 points, which was followed by Erik Stevenson netting seven 3-pointers to put up 31 points for WVU. This goes completely against the season-long metrics for Auburn.
On the year, Pearl’s squad is in the top 25 in the nation in AdjD (22nd), EFG% (6th) and opponents’ 3-point% (2nd).
Hopefully, it was just a bad week for the program, but the Tigers can’t afford this to continue with No. 2 Tennessee, No. 4 Alabama, Missouri and the Aggies all upcoming on the schedule.
Georgia vs Auburn Betting Pick
When I look at this game, I still do not trust this Auburn team to cover a double-digit spread against most teams not named South Carolina in the SEC.
So, my best bet is to take Georgia at +12, which I would play down to 10.5.
Yes, the spot absolutely screams Tigers here, as they're coming off back-to-back losses. They were also blown out in their last contest at home that snapped the nation’s longest home winning streak.
However, the prices are still not reflecting this.
This is still the same Auburn team that failed to cover this line in wins against Florida and Mississippi, which are two teams that I have similarly ranked to Georgia.
If we look back at the first matchup, the Tigers closed as -5.5 road favorites in a contest they eventually lost. Even when accounting for home court, this is still a big swing in the odds in a game that was just a month ago.
We also have to remember that Auburn has a trip to Tennessee this weekend, so it could be looking to rotate players more than usual to save itself for that contest.
Pick: Georgia +12 (Play to 10.5) |
