Two of the top Summit League programs meet as Oral Roberts travels to face off against South Dakota State.
Oral Roberts jumped in the national spotlight last season after its Cinderella run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. This year the Golden Eagles have traded wins for losses and own a 7-5 record through their first dozen games. Despite the up-and-down start, Oral Roberts' offenset, led by Max Ambas, has remained consistent and continues to put up points.
The Golden Eagles travel to face South Dakota State — the only program in the Summit League which owns a higher offensive efficiency ranking than Oral Roberts. The Jackrabbits play with a top-20 tempo in the nation, which has led to them averaging 87 points per game.
These two familiar foes played twice last year and the matchups averaged over 180 total points. Neither team has changed much since then, so can we expect the same this season?
Oral Roberts' offensive identity is no secret at this point, the Golden Eagles are going to bomb lots of 3-pointers. The Golden Eagles take over half (51%) of their shots attempts from behind the arc and convert on over 38% of them, which ranks 32nd in the country.
Much of that success is thanks to Max Abmas, who has connected on 44% of his 107 attempts this season. But he isn’t alone, Oral Roberts has three other players who are connecting on over 40% from behind the arc.
Abmas is the heartbeat to this offense averaging 21 points per game. The six-foot junior guard has proven the ability to explode on any given night as he dropped 38 against Tulsa and 32 versus South Dakota. In the second matchup with the Jackrabbits last season Abmas scored 42 points 14-of-20 from the field.
As a group the offense has been dynamite averaging 81 points but defensively, they rank 282nd, allowing 75 points per contest. Kenpom has the Golden Eagles pinned with the 253rd defensive efficiency ranking, and the group has been awful at defending shots inside the arc where they rank 262nd in the nation.
South Dakota State owns the seventh-ranked scoring offense, which puts up 84.4 points per game behind its top-20 tempo. The group has scored into the triple-digits in two separate games this season, while allowing Alabama to put up 104 against them.
Noah Freidel is the leading scorer for the Jack Rabbits, averaging 18 points per contest. Freidel has connected on 40% of his 100 three-point attempts while hitting 51% of his 2-point attempts. Six-foot-seven forward Douglas Wilson is averaging 14 points and has scored double digits in 11 of his last 12 games. He is a beast inside the paint, where he has done most of his offensive damage.
South Dakota State ranks 19th in offensive efficiency rating and is hitting 57% of its field goal attempts. Though only 36% of its shot attempts come from behind the arc, the Jack Rabbits are hitting 42% of them which is the second-best clip in the country.
Defensively South Dakota has been putrid, allowing opponents to score 75 points per game. Opponents are hitting 35% from behind the arc, and 52% of its 2-point field goal attempts which both rank outside the top-250. Oral Roberts offense is set to have a field day, especially from 3-point territory as they have done most games this season.
Oral Roberts vs. South Dakota State Betting Pick
These two teams matched up twice last season with the final scores being 95-80 and 103-86. The two games averaged 130 field goal attempts, 50 three-point attempts, and 45 free-throws. Oral Roberts shot 35% from the field in one of the games and still managed to put up 80-points.
This game should be no different with both programs wanting to get out in transition and push the tempo. South Dakota State has been horrid at defending the three-point line and we know that Oral Roberts will be bombing away as usual. The Golden Eagles have been bad at stopping opponents inside the paint and the Jack Rabbits take 65% of its shots from inside the arc where they shoot 53%.
Get your popcorn ready because this is going to be a track-meet with two of the top programs in the Summit League.
