Two teams that are plenty good enough to be second weekend teams in the NCAA Tournament face off at Schollmaier Arena on Wednesday night as the TCU Horned Frogs take on the Texas Longhorns.
Texas is still alive in the Big 12 title race, but needs this game if it wants a real chance of chasing down Kansas.
Meanwhile, TCU is starting to gel again after Mike Miles Jr. and Eddie Lampkin Jr. have returned to the lineup.
Let's discuss where the betting value lies in Fort Worth.
Texas has not lost consecutive games all season, but that streak will really be put to the test on Wednesday night.
The Longhorns are one of the more balanced teams in America, ranking inside the top 30 in both Ken Pom's offensive and defensive efficiency rankings.
Rodney Terry has done a masterful job stepping in as the interim head coach in a difficult situation.
Terry continues to lean on a veteran core– including guys like Marcus Carr, Sir'Jabari Rice and Timmy Allen.
All three have been stalwarts on both ends of the floor, and emotional leaders in the locker room.
When these teams met back in January, Texas struggled to contain the run-and-gun attack of TCU. They mounted a second half comeback to secure the victory, but the Longhorns will need to guard much better in Fort Worth if they want to complete the regular season sweep.
This is the most talented team that Jamie Dixon has had in his tenure in Fort Worth.
The Horned Frogs have the pieces to make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament, and it will likely come down to whether or not they can make enough outside shots over consecutive nights.
Miles is the straw that stirs the drink for TCU on the offensive end. It is no coincidence that the Horned Frogs' offensive numbers have gone way up since he returned from a hyperextended knee.
In addition to Miles, Damion Baugh and Emanuel Miller can each create their own shots, and Jakobe Coles and Lampkin are both loads on the inside.
TCU will need to contain the Texas backcourt if it wants to even the season series between these two at 1-1.
Texas may not have a big man it consistently throws it to on the low block, but has a plethora of athletic bigs who can really attack the offensive glass.
TCU will need to make a concentrated effort to hold the Horns to one shot a trip.
Texas vs TCU Betting Pick
I like the Horned Frogs at home as a short favorite to get it done in this spot. TCU is finally starting to fully click again after getting some of its key pieces back from injury.
The Frogs squandered a big first half lead in the first meeting between these two, so they will have revenge on their minds in a big way.
Texas is a good offensive team but the Horns can sometimes get a bit stagnant and too reliant on Carr to create.
TCU should be able to get some easy baskets in transition, and I trust the Frogs to be able to outpace Texas behind the home crowd in what will likely be another shootout.
Pick: TCU -2.5 |
