My Colorado State vs Memphis NCAAB Betting Preview
I want to take you back to Tuesday, March 19th, 2024. That was when Niko Medved and Colorado State got their first NCAA tournament win of his head coaching tenure.
He was playing Virginia and Tony Bennett, a head coach with two feet out the door (not that anybody knew).
I will take it full circle by acknowledging that Medved is now two feet out the door.
Nobody is reporting this, but I think Medved wants the Minnesota job, and I think he wants to get a head start on recruiting in the portal, which is tough to do the longer you’re coaching in the NCAA Tournament.
I think it’s disrespectful to give us points with Memphis to fade the Rams, especially when the Tigers will have the best player on the floor in PJ Haggerty.
Yes, Nique Clifford is phenomenal, but he’s about to battle the best shooting guard in college basketball.
We’ve seen Memphis get up for some big moments this year. The Tigers were stellar in the Maui Invitational, beating UConn and Michigan State en route to the final.
Meanwhile, I can’t shake the Mountain West’s constant issues in the Big Dance. Colorado State had a remarkable run in the conference tournament, which is awesome, but I still can’t believe the Rams are laying points in the first round against Memphis.
The Tigers’ biggest weakness is on the defensive glass (301st nationally in defensive rebounding rate, per KenPom), but the Rams won’t exploit that (279th in offensive rebounding rate, per KenPom).
Sure, I’m worried about the Tyrese Hunter injury. But the Tigers played fine in their conference tournament without him. I also expect them to play bigger lineups without Hunter, which should help when guarding Clifford.
I’ll take the “underdog” who got the better seed and has the best player on the court.
