Creighton became one of the trendy offseason sleeper picks to win next season's national championship in college basketball.
After a commitment from transfer Baylor Scheierman, no one is sleeping on the Blue Jays.
Greg McDermott's program received a huge boost on Tuesday when Scheierman announced his commitment to Creighton. Scheierman, a six-foot-six wing who played for South Dakota State last season, is coming off a year where he averaged 16 points and nearly eight rebounds per game en route to winning Summit League Player of the Year.
Creighton's betting odds have been shortening all offseason. Once listed as high as +9000, the Blue Jays are as low as +1500 now at PointsBet. BetMGM moved Creighton from +4000 to +2500 following the news of Scheierman's transfer.
McDermott's team lost to Kansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
However, Scheierman could still spurn the Blue Jays for the NBA. He has yet to remove his name from draft consideration. If he returns to college, it'll be in a Big East that will look a little different this season.
Villanova's Jay Wright retired, signaling a changing of the guard for the dominant team in the conference.
If Scheierman remains in college basketball, he'll join a core that includes Ryan Nembhard, Trey Alexander, Arthur Kaluma and reigning Big East Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner.
Prior to the transfer, Creighton ranked No. 9 in ESPN's top-25. Some are ready to put the Blue Jays squarely in the top five in the country.
