My Georgetown vs Marquette College Basketball Betting Preview
After winning nine games — including two in Big East play — last season in Ed Cooley’s first campaign in D.C., Georgetown has made monumental progress in 2024-25.
The Hoyas have already won 12 games this season, with their lone losses coming against Notre Dame and West Virginia. Cooley’s bunch is currently riding a five-game win streak, and the roster is flushed with four players who are averaging double figures in points (Thomas Sorber, Jayden Epps, Malik Mack and Micah Peavy).
But the Hoyas now take a huge step up in competition over the next two games, starting with this road showdown against top-10 Marquette.
Remember, despite its record, Georgetown still ranks only 64th in KenPom and owns zero Quad 1 victories. Its biggest win of the season came against a Creighton team that lost Pop Isaacs for the season, so it needs a true resume booster.
The problem is that Marquette is one of the most complete teams in the entire country, ranking 15th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 16th in adjusted defensive efficiency.
Kam Jones is playing at a First Team All-American level and his sidekicks — David Joplin, Stevie Mitchell, Chase Ross and Ben Gold — have been excellent in their own right.
I don’t expect the Golden Eagles to lose this game, but I do believe this is too many points. While I’m a firm believer that Georgetown isn’t for real, Cooley is still a high-level coach and the Hoyas have some slight advantages.
Marquette loves to force turnovers and turn those giveaways into easy points on the other end (13th in potential points off breakaway steals, via Haslametrics). Meanwhile, Cooley preaches ball security and defense, making sure his teams are disciplined and smart with the basketball.
Also, the Hoyas can take advantage on the glass, as they rank 94th in the country in rebounding while Marquette sits at 279th.
Again, I don’t expect Georgetown to win this game — or maybe even keep it within single digits — but almost 13 points is a bit disrespectful to this roster. I'm sure Cooley will use that as motivation while the Hoyas fight hard on the road in a big spot.
