My Georgetown vs St. John's College Basketball Betting Preview

St. John's is relevant nationally for the first time in nearly 10 years, and it's not just because Rick Pitino is on the sidelines.

The Johnnies are 14-3 overall and while they're just 1-3 in Quad 1 games, St. John's three losses have come by a combined five points against Baylor (neutral), Georgia (neutral) and Creighton (away).

Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith created buzz around the program in the offseason, but it's been the play of RJ Luis Jr. that's taken St. John's to another level.

Luis dropped a ridiculous 30 points and 10 rebounds on Villanova on Saturday, and he's the team's leading scorer at 17.4 points a night.

Georgetown has been excellent in its own right, though, and that's why I believe this is too many points.

Ed Cooley's group already has more wins in the Big East than all of 2023-24, and even though the Hoyas aren't in the class of the top teams in the league just yet, they performed admirably in the last two outings against Marquette and UConn.

Georgetown also has some advantages in a couple of areas against St. John's: the offensive glass and defensively.

St. John's has a defensive second-chance conversion percentage of 7.3%, which ranks 43rd-worst in the nation, according to Haslametrics. Meanwhile, Georgetown ranks 41st in the nation in potential points off of offensive boards.

Also, Georgetown is sound on the defensive end of the floor (as most Cooley teams are), forcing opponents to beat it from downtown. That's St. John's biggest weakness, as it doesn't shoot the ball very well from deep (30%).

Also, while the Johnnies are deeper and more athletic than the Hoyas, they may not have Smith in the lineup.

St. John's Deivon Smith has a very sore shoulder injury, per Rick Pitino.

Pitino on Smith:

"He could miss the next game against Georgetown, but he won't be out a long time."

Georgetown's Jayden Epps has been nursing an injury of his own (he only played 14 minutes vs. UConn), so that's a potential negative for the Hoyas.

However, after a couple more days of rest, he's likely much closer to 100% than Smith.

I don't expect Georgetown to win, but a double-digit spread is too much.
