My Gonzaga vs Saint Mary's NCAAB Betting Preview
Reigning champion Saint Mary’s will clash with Gonzaga in the WCC Championship game for the fourth straight year and sixth time in the last seven seasons.
In the semifinals, Gonzaga beat San Francisco, 85-76, and Saint Mary’s defeated Pepperdine, 74-59.
Interestingly, Saint Mary’s is the underdog despite being the regular-season conference champion and taking both previous matchups against Gonzaga. However, the margin for both contests were single digits, so this should be another close one.
In order for the Gaels to repeat as conference tournament champions, they'll have to use their stingy defense to slow down the Bulldogs' explosive offense.
Led by senior forward Graham Ike, Gonzaga ranks second nationally in points per game (87.5) and field-goal percentage (50.2). Ike amassed 27 points and 10 rebounds in the win over San Francisco.
Saint Mary’s has to limit senior guard Khalif Battle, who went for 21 points against the Dons.
With the victory over Pepperdine, Saint Mary’s has held opponents under 60 points in 13 games this season. The Gaels defense ranks first in the WCC in points per game allowed (60.8) and field-goal percentage (40.8).
Per 100 possessions, Saint Mary’s ranks fifth nationally, giving up 87.8 points. Seniors Augustas Marciulionis and Mitchell Saxen will apply plenty of defensive pressure against Gonzaga.
Gonzaga will pose a challenge for Saint Mary’s on the boards. The Zags rank 32nd nationally in rebounds.
However, Saint Mary’s is up for the task, as it out-rebounded opponents by 10.6 a game. Paulius Murauskas will grab double-digit rebounds for the Gaels.
Saint Mary’s has gone 2-0 against the spread this season as a 3.5-point underdog. Gonzaga is 13-18 against the spread when cast as a 3.5-point favorite or more.
These longtime rivals will deliver an instant classic that comes down to the wire. Saint Mary’s will cover the spread and edge Gonzaga to capture a second straight WCC Tournament title.
