More About Gonzaga
D.J. James: Gonzaga is still the best team in the country.
The Zags maintained the second-best offense and seventh-best defense through the WCC Tournament, per KenPom. And neither of those rankings changed much after their loss to Saint Mary’s right before the conference tournament — for good reason. The Gaels are a strong team, and that let-down spot for the Zags did not alter their aspirations, as evidenced by them avenging said loss with an 82-69 win over the Gaels in the WCC Tournament final.
This team can hit and guard 3s. Julian Strawther, Rasir Bolton, Andrew Nembhard and Chet Holmgren each launched at least 97 3-pointers heading into the NCAA Tournament. Nembhard is the least efficient of the four — and he was still hitting outside shots at a 36.5% clip through the WCC Tournament.
The key to defeating the Zags is eliminating their bigs and the mismatches they can create, which ultimately hinders their entire offensive approach. That’s easier said than done against a veteran in Drew Timme and a unique talent in Holmgren, but that will be every opponent's blueprint in the tournament.
More About Memphis
Kyle Remillard: Since Penny Hardaway’s infamous press conference back in late January, the Tigers have been cruising.
The biggest improvement during this hot streak has been on the defensive end of the floor, easily taking care of business both from the floor and beyond the arc — not to mention some impressive blocking.
Six-foot-11 center Jalen Duren has proven to be the most impactful player on the roster on both ends of the floor. During the regular season, Duren led the AAC in rebounds (7.5) and blocks (2.2) per game. Fellow bigman DeAndre Williams also put up 11 points per game while hitting 58% of his field-goal attempts. The duo is tough to stop.
Hardaway’s squad is finally healthy and showing what many thought it was capable of at the beginning of the season. I believe in the talent on this Memphis squad, which is why I took them as a flyer to win the national championship at odds of +10000.
