My Grand Canyon vs Maryland NCAA Tournament Betting Preview
Seattle, Washington, is the site of Friday afternoon's clash between the Grand Canyon Antelopes and Maryland Terrapins. The Lopes became the WAC champions after defeating Utah Valley in the tournament championship game.
Grand Canyon was a darling in last year's NCAA Tournament after it knocked off Saint Mary's in the first round. The Lopes have many returning pieces from last year's squad, but the key missing impact player is Gabe McGlothan.
This team isn't as lethal without him, which could pose a problem against Maryland's "Crab Five." The Terrapins are a terrific basketball team, headlined by freshman sensation Derik Queen.
The Terps are 10.5-point favorites, and despite how good they are, I have no interest in laying that large of a number. The Lopes don't have the same offensive explosiveness as last season, but they're far better defensively.
GCU ranks 67th in adjusted defensive efficiency, including 24th in opponent 2-point percentage. However, it has terrific size, so it's not your typical mid-major team that will be significantly outsized.
As good as the Terps are, they have essentially no depth. If they get into foul trouble here, they could be on the ropes for an upset.
I worry about the Lopes' 3-point shooting, as they rank 284th in the country from beyond the arc. However, they do an excellent job generating trips to the foul line, which could be massive for multiple reasons.
If they get into the bonus early in both halves, they can contribute points to the scoreboard and further deplete Maryland's depth because of foul trouble.
As good as Maryland was offensively, I think there's potential shooting regression looming for its 3-point offense. The Terrapins shot 37% from deep on the season but ranked outside the top 200 in attempts in that area.
All it could take is an off night from deep for the Terps to be on upset alert.
On the other side, Grand Canyon head coach Bryce Drew is terrific.
His team has seen three power-conference opponents this season, losing close matchups to Arizona State and Georgia but beating Stanford.
Star forward Tyon-Grant Foster is now fully healthy, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him have another massive performance on the national stage.
The Lopes are very live for an upset, but it will depend on how well they shoot from deep and if they can get to the foul line enough. Regardless, I think 10.5 points is far too many. They can stay within the number because of their defense.
