Iowa vs Maryland College Basketball Betting Preview

It’s been a tough season for the Hawkeyes, and it’s about to get much tougher now that Owen Freeman is done for the campaign (right finger injury).

Iowa’s interior defense was already pathetic, and the Hawkeyes are now even smaller without Freeman, often running 6-foot-8 at the five with Ladji Dembele.

That’s a huge problem against the rim-reliant Terps, who will cut, roll and post the rim relentlessly behind Julian Reese and Derik Queen.

I also don’t trust Iowa’s dribble defense against Ja’Kobi Gillespie, a very efficient perimeter ball-screen orchestrator.

Iowa is still a super scary, uber-efficient, pace-and-space offense, working tirelessly in transition while running relentless secondary actions on the perimeter to generate catch-and-shoot opportunities and bomb away from deep.

Unfortunately for the Hawkeyes, Maryland plays drop-coverage, funneling on-ball creation into the middle of the floor while viciously denying secondary catch-and-shoot opportunities.

Fran McCaffery-led offenses are never comfortable running primary-creation offense, so I don’t love their chances on Sunday.

The number is a bit high, but it could be a good letdown spot for the Hawkeyes on the second leg of a two-game road trip after upsetting Rutgers in Piscataway on Wednesday.

Ultimately, I don’t see how Iowa keeps this one close unless the Hawkeyes make a million tough jumpers across 40 minutes (which, I admit, isn’t out of the realm of possibility).
