Jacksonville State vs Liberty Conference USA Final Betting Preview

Regular-season champion Liberty (27-6, 13-5) has one more challenger in the way of securing a spot in the NCAA Tournament as it takes on Jacksonville State (22-11, 12-6) in the Conference USA Tournament title game on Saturday.

Liberty and Jacksonville State split their two regular season meetings this season.

This is the sixth time Liberty has reached the conference tournament title game in the last eight seasons.

Liberty cruised to a 81-60 victory over UTEP in quarterfinals. However, the Flames had to rally from 13 down with 10 minutes left to edge Kennesaw State 81-79 in the semifinals.

Jacksonville State beat FIU 65-56 in the quarterfinals and then escaped with a 70-68 win vs. Middle Tennessee in the semifinals. Freshman guard Quel’Ron House scored a game-high 20 points and calmly sank the game-winning free throws with 22 seconds remaining.

Jacksonville State allowed 11 3-pointers against Middle Tennessee. Liberty is the top 3-point shooting team in C-USA (10.4 made per game), so it has an array of weapons to exploit the Gamecocks from the outside.

Guard Kaden Metheny erupted for seven of Liberty’s 14 3-pointers against Kennesaw State. Metheny will continue his hot perimeter play in the biggest game of the season for Liberty.

Senior Jayvon Maughmer is 9-for-14 on 3-pointers in his last three games, so he’s a strong threat as well.

Metheny and Colin Porter will push the pace and get Liberty plenty of fast-break chances.

On the other end, Liberty is a sound defensive team. The Flames are No. 38 nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency. Liberty also leads the conference in 3-point defense.

However, the Flames uncharacteristically surrendered eight 3-pointers vs. Kennesaw State.

But they’ll tighten up defensively beyond the arc. The Flames will limit the opportunities from downtown for House, senior forward Marcellus Brigham Jr. and others.

Liberty will cover the spread and get the victory to earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
