Loyola Marymount vs Gonzaga College Basketball Betting Preview
Gonzaga is in trouble. The Zags have three losses in conference play for the first time since 2016, and the Gaels likely locked up the WCC with last Saturday’s victory.
On paper, it’s a prime bounce-back opportunity for the Bulldogs, returning home after shooting 3-for-17 (18%) from 3 in a brutal road loss at Moraga. They should be fired up for a dominant win.
Meanwhile, we’re probably reaching the peak of the market on Loyola Marymount, which has won five consecutive games, including a surprising three-point home victory over Santa Clara.
Of course, aside from the win over the Broncos, the Lions' other four wins have come against KenPom sub-290 squads. Before the losing streak, they suffered blowout losses to Saint Mary’s (by 25) and the Zags (by 28).
In the first head-to-head meeting, Gonzaga dominated the shot-volume battle, taking 17 more attempts on seven more rebounds and eight fewer turnovers.
The Bulldogs carved the Lions up in transition (22 points on 15 possessions, 1.47 PPP, per Synergy) and in the post (15 points on 14 possessions, 1.07 PPP, per Synergy), as they’re liable to do, even against the Lions’ typically good transition-and-post-denial defense.
Loyola is also a transition-and-post-heavy offense, but the Lions are far less effective in both areas.
At the same time, the Zags are an elite transition-denial defense (nine transition points per game allowed, 38th nationally, per Synergy).
The Lions were somewhat effective in both areas in the first head-to-head meeting, but they were still held under 1.00 PPP (a combined 19 points on 20 possessions), which is insufficient with turnover and rebounding issues.
I suspect the Zags execute the same game plan at home in an excellent situational spot. The Bulldogs will be fired up, and I don’t think the Lions can make the necessary adjustments to avoid another blowout loss.
