Minnesota vs Maryland NCAAB Betting Preview
The Golden Gophers put forth a valiant effort against Ohio State at The Barn last week, losing by one in double overtime. In fact, Minnesota would've won that game if not for an ill-advised foul by Kadyn Betts at the end of the first OT.
But that doesn't mean the Gophers are suddenly a stiff Big Ten team. Four of the Gophers' five Big Ten losses have been by double-digits, and those defeats have come by an average of 18.5 points per game.
That's bad news, especially on the road in College Park, where Minnesota (359th in adjusted tempo, via KenPom) is very unlikely to control the pace of the game.
Meanwhile, Maryland struggled on its West Coast road trip (losing to Washington and Oregon), but it cruised past UCLA in its last outing.
The Terps' frontcourt duo of freshman Derik Queen and Julian Reese is combining for 28.7 points and 16.6 rebounds per game. Kevin Willard's club also has plenty of shooters in Selton Miguel, Rodney Rice and Ja'Kobi Gillespie, who's also done an excellent job of taking care of the ball.
Even though this sounds simple, that's where the edge lies. Maryland has much more shooting and talent than Minnesota, and I don't know how the Gophers are going to keep up offensively in a faster-paced game than they'd like to play.
The Gophers are shooting only 31% from downtown this year, but even more concerning is their 62% free throw percentage (360th in the nation).
Also, one of Minnesota's main strengths is grabbing and converting on offensive rebounds, and that won't be a path to success against Queen and Reese up front.
Give me Maryland to win by 15+ points.
Pick: Maryland -14.5 (Play to -15)
