My Navy vs American Patriot League Tournament Betting Preview
After years of Colgate reigning over the Patriot League with an iron fist, the Raiders took a step back this season, resulting in a power vacuum as teams hunted their first real chance at a conference crown in half a decade.
At various times, different teams looked like they had a step up, yet for most of the season, it was American out in front.
That tracks given the way this roster was built.
American improved on its conference record each of the last two seasons and brought back production at sky high levels. Only one team in the country carried over as many of its allocated player minutes from last season to this season, per KenPom.
Except for two freshmen seeing limited minutes, the entire rotation returned from last season, with just one contributor having ever played for another program.
Three of American's best players are in their fourth or fifth season with the program, meshing into the Patriot League's best team.
Two late-season losses to the service academies gave away the regular season solo conference championship, tying a Bucknell team that won its last six games.
Why then is American only a 2.5-point favorite over the fifth-seeded Midshipmen? Navy swept the Eagles this season, including a bludgeoning in Annapolis in which American managed only seven points in the game's final 10 minutes.
I'm skeptical of Navy's chances to topple American a third time. Not necessarily due to the mythical "Hard To Beat the Same Team Three Times" fallacy, but more because of the nature of those two earlier games.
American shot 35% from outside the arc this season, but against the Mids, it made just 16-of-64 from long range (25%).
Navy comes off a win at Bucknell in which the officiating loomed large. Point guard Austin Benigni shot 2-of-12 from the field but was award 22 trips to the free throw line, many on dubious calls.
American, meanwhile, dispatched mighty Colgate with relative ease in the semifinals, a symbolic showing that this program is ready to represent the Patriot League in the Big Dance after Colgate did so in the last five NCAA Tournaments.
I'm taking the Eagles to avenge their regular season losses and celebrate on their home court.
