Penn State vs Indiana College Basketball Betting Preview
Indiana's in must-win mode, as the Hoosiers are one of the first teams currently out of the Big Dance, according to Bracket Matrix.
The Hoosiers are coming off a massive win over Purdue, so I thought we would get a more inflated number here.
However, Penn State is playing better the past two games, crushing Nebraska and earning a victory over a feisty Minnesota squad.
The Nittany Lions went through a lull (they lost 11 of 12), but they dealt with injuries during that stretch. Also, they lost a bunch of close games, including a five-point loss to Sparty on the road and a four-point defeat to Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The Nittany Lions lost by six against Indiana at The Palestra, but the Hoosiers shot 40% from 3 — which is rare — and Penn State was 3-of-21 from downtown and 10-of-18 from the free throw line.
It's worth noting that Malik Reneau didn't play for Indiana and Puff Johnson did for Penn State. But regardless, over that 12-game stretch, Penn State dropped from 35th in KenPom to 77th. I think the Nittany Lions are a much better team than their current record.
I do worry about Indiana dominating on the offensive glass and the Hoosiers have been good against the press (94th percentile), but they're not a strong catch-and-shoot offense. They don't have elite perimeter shooters, which is really how you beat this aggressive Penn State defense.
Also, Yanic Konan Niederhauser is on fire the past two games, scoring 24 against Minnesota and 19 versus Nebraska.
Finally, you never know where you're gonna get with Indiana.
The narrative surrounding Indiana right now is it just beat Purdue, it's in must-win mode and it's at home. However, Penn State is still trying and it's playing to go to the Big Ten Tournament and keep its season alive.
