My Pitt vs Notre Dame College Basketball Betting Preview

Round one of the ACC Tournament is set to take place Tuesday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina, as the Pittsburgh Panthers will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

It's a fascinating matchup considering both of these programs nose-dived towards the end of the season.

An even more fascinating aspect of the matchup is that Notre Dame is coming off a four-overtime thriller against Cal on Saturday. A couple of starters from the Irish played over 50 minutes, so we could see quite a bit of tired legs.

Part of me thinks that's why the Panthers are entering the matchup as 4.5-point favorites.

Notre Dame guard Braeden Shrewsberry is also questionable, as he's missed the last couple of contests. Shrewsberry is critical to the Notre Dame backcourt, so it'll impact the Irish tremendously if he can't go.

I also like the matchup for the Pitt offense. It's safe to say that the Panthers were unlucky in their 3-point shooting during conference play — only shooting 34% as a team in that area despite being fourth in the ACC in attempts.

The Panthers should be able to find success offensively, especially against a horrific Irish interior defense. Pitt's scoring from inside the arc isn't great either, but it should see a surplus of looks since the Notre Dame defense is so poor.

The Panthers get to the free throw line quite often, and the Irish aren't disciplined on defense either.

I think Pitt will get some positive 3-point shooting regression, and it should be able to take advantage of its multiple chances at the charity stripe. The Panthers shoot 79% from the free throw line.

Pitt's defense isn't great, but it does an excellent job forcing turnovers. That's the one area on offense where Notre Dame continues to struggle, as it ranked 14th in the ACC in turnovers per game.

The Panthers ranked first in block percentage and third in steal percentage during conference play.

There's enough angles here to think that the Panthers' defense should be able to contain the Irish offense. I thought I would never utter these words about Pitt after it looked like it had given up on the season, but the Panthers are severely undervalued Tuesday.

These teams split their regular-season matchups, with Notre Dame capturing the most recent duel. That said, this is a tremendous buy-low spot for Pitt.

Considering that both teams are nothing special, I love that we're getting such a quick turnaround after that quadruple-overtime matchup on Saturday, which could lead to a tremendous flat spot for Notre Dame.
