Pitt vs Wisconsin College Basketball Betting Preview
The Panthers and Badgers are a combined 12-0 to start this season, but it's Greg Gard's team that has been one of the biggest surprises in the nation.
Wisconsin was picked to finish 12th in the Big Ten Preseason Media Poll after losing Tyler Wahl, Chucky Hepburn and leading scorer AJ Storr. However, the Badgers haven't blinked an eye, dropping 103 points on Arizona and pummeling UCF — a team that beat Texas A&M — at a neutral site.
John Tonje, a transfer from Missouri who averaged just 2.6 points per game last season, is putting up 21.3 points a night, including a 41-point performance against the Wildcats.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are in the mix to be the third-best team in the ACC behind Duke and UNC. Jeff Capel has elite guard play from Ish Leggett, Jaland Lowe and Houston transfer Damian Dunn, and Cameron Corhen and Guillermo Diaz Graham highlight the frontcourt.
Wisconsin is the ranked team, but I like the Panthers in this spot.
They have two advantages: on the glass and defensively.
We will start in the rebounding department. The Badgers are only 253rd in the country in rebounding, and they were absolutely crushed in the paint by Arizona. Pitt will have an advantage inside, given it rebounds at a high clip (62nd in the nation).
The Wildcats couldn't turn that interior advantage into a victory because they didn't shoot well from 3 and they had no chance of stopping the Badgers' improved offense.
Well, the Panthers have allowed only 60 points per game (21st nationally) and they have shooters like Lowe and Dunn in the backcourt.
Most importantly, Pittsburgh doesn't turn the basketball over. Leggett and Lowe are steady, and the Panthers are top-50 nationally in turnovers per game.
I think this is the game in which Wisconsin suffers its first loss, and Pitt will cover in the process.
