Saint Mary's vs Oregon State College Basketball Betting Preview
I need to take Oregon State as a home 'dog against Saint Mary's.
As we all know, Wayne Tinkle is a crafty defensive coach, as he loves to throw zone into the fold.
He was interviewed recently and he basically said what we're all kind of begging college coaches to do when their teams are struggling a little defensively: Just throw out something different, a 1-3-1 zone, etc.
With the zone, you can also hide a guy who's in foul trouble, and it really helps with Oregon State's ball-screen coverage and dribble handoffs, too.
This Tinkle zone will throw a wrench into what the Gaels want to run because Saint Mary's just isn't a zone-oriented team (.94 points per possession, 45th percentile).
The Gaels played Joe Gallo and Merrimack earlier in the season, a team that likes to mix in zone. They were a 20-plus point favorite, and they ultimately won by only five despite grabbing 17 offensive rebounds.
Also, in the WCC, the Gaels don't face a ton of zone — other than Pepperdine, and Pepperdine is 9-14 overall.
While Pepperdine has nothing on the offensive end, Oregon State is significantly better on that end of the floor. Michael Rataj has blossomed in his third year on U.S. soil, as the German big is putting up to 18 and eight per game. He's been spectacular in recent wins over Santa Clara and Gonzaga.
Also, Damarco Minor is the stabilizer for the Beavs in this one. If he cuts down on his turnovers, he can be a great floor general.
The Gaels excel in a lot of areas, but they don't put a ton of pressure on you, and they don't force a lot of turnovers.
The Beavers are 4-0 straight up and against the spread at home in their last four, including that overtime upset of the Zags. I think they keep this one close, so I would play this down to 3.5.
